How is the Company-Italy doing? Infocamera Report

Company-Italy, first quarter in chiaroscuro. Traditional sectors in decline, business services on the rise, professional and financial activities on the rise. Numbers and comparisons from the Infocamere-Movimprese report

The path to recovery of normality continues for the Company-Italy after the pandemic fracture.

Between January and March the balance between openings and closures of economic activities stood at -10,951 units, a higher value than the same quarter of the last three years but still well below the average of the last decade (-14 thousand businesses) . The balance of the quarter reflects, on the one hand, the acceleration of cancellations (117,832 equal to 7.9% more than the same period of 2023) and, on the other, a moderate growth in registrations (106,881, 5% more more than the previous year). Overall, both flows of openings and closings of businesses still remain below the average of the pre-pandemic period.

This is what emerges from the Infocamere -Movimprese report on the first quarter of 2024, which specifies that when evaluating the data for the first quarter of the year it is important to consider that, historically, this period frequently records negative balances, mainly due to the concentration at the end of the year of a high number of business closures. A phenomenon of a technical-administrative nature which extends its effects on the Chamber archives even into the first weeks of the new year, influencing the data for the first quarter.

All the details.

CAPITAL COMPANIES PERFORMED IN THE FIRST QUARTER

The start-up balance of the year had greater repercussions especially on individual businesses, which recorded a decrease of 15,755 units compared to the end of December (-0.52%). The decrease in partnerships was less significant in absolute terms, with a reduction of 6,352 units but greater in relative terms than that of individual businesses (-0.74%). Positive note, albeit attenuated compared to the previous year, from joint-stock companies which recorded growth of 12,112 units in the first three months of the year (+0.65%).

SECTORS WHICH HAVE RECORDED GROWTH

During the first quarter of 2024, several sectors showed significant growth, while others recorded a reduction in their scope. Professional, scientific and technical activities (+2,699 companies, +1.09% percentage change compared to December 2023), together with financial ones (+694, +0.51%) and rental and business support services ( +935 companies, +0.43%), stood out for an increase in the entrepreneurial team.

TRADE, AGRICULTURE AND MANUFACTURING ARE STRUGGLING

On the opposite side, the most appreciable reductions in the number of activities concerned trade (-9,998, equal to a negative percentage change of 0.71%), agriculture (-6,010 businesses and -0.85%) and manufacturing (-3,123 companies and -0.61%). This highlights specific challenges that these sectors are facing, perhaps due to changes in consumer preferences, agricultural policies or, more generally, the impact of global economic fluctuations.

IT HOLDS THE SOUTH

Finally, in territorial terms, all four main macro-divisions recorded negative balances, with the Center notable for the smallest decline in the quarter (-0.11% against the average of -0.18%) and the South and the Islands for better stability compared to the same period of the previous year: -0.16% this year versus -0.15% last year. Among the regions, only Lazio and Basilicata recorded a positive balance, of 993 and 32 companies respectively. On the contrary, Piedmont (-1,934 units) and Veneto (-1,518) experienced the most significant reductions in absolute terms.
