How much do you like made in Italy wine abroad? Map and numbers

All the export numbers, the most popular wines abroad and some considerations on the impact that the war between Russia and Ukraine will have on the sector. Sace report

Even on tables outside our own borders, Italian wine is confirmed as one of the most loved products. Together with France and Spain, Italy is in fact among the three main world exporters of wine in value thanks to its territorial peculiarities and competitive prices.

HOW MUCH IS THE EXPORT OF ITALIAN WINE

Our wine, according to an analysis carried out by the Sace research office, represents a quarter of exports from the Italian agri-food sector. The crisis sown by Covid has known less than other sectors and today reports excellent performances.

Cross-border sales, the report reads, continued to grow also in 2021 with an increase of 12.4% compared to the previous year for a value of 7.3 billion euros.

HOW ITALY IS POSITIONED WORLDWIDE

Italy is once again confirmed as one of the top exporting countries – together with France and Spain – both in terms of volume and value, but with a positive difference that sets us apart. The Italian share in value, in fact, grows over time and settles firmly in second place, while France, while remaining the leaders, sees its weight drop below 30%, followed by Spain with 9% of global sales achieved over national borders.

In this field, the French cousins are favored by the prices of wines, on average higher than Italian ones, in particular in the comparison between "bubbles" with French champagne on the one hand and Italian prosecco on the other.

Quantitative data, on the other hand, show a different picture. The largest share is attributable to Spain (20.2%), closely followed by Italy (20.1%), while France accounts for 13.7%.

WHO MATTERS MORE

The good results obtained from the export of Italian wine are also due to a consistent growth in consumption by foreigners. The first, by now consolidated, target market is the United States but, according to the report, China and Japan, where the value of Italian wine sales is already quite significant, are potential markets with strong growth.

THE MOST IMPORTANT ITALIAN WINES

Still wines (5.2 billion euros) are leading the excellent performance on foreign markets, followed by sparkling wines (1.8 billion euros), and it is in particular the demand for prosecco to drive the segment with growth of 31.5% in 2021 and of 14.1% on average in the last four years.

Among the characteristics that distinguish and make Italian wine loved there are certainly the territorial peculiarities for which we boast numerous quality awards. In 2021, according to the analysis, Veneto wine was the most exported, for a value of almost 2.5 billion euros. Excellent result achieved in particular thanks to the excellent performance of Prosecco di Treviso, which in 2021 exported bubbles for almost 830 million euros, up by more than 15% compared to 2020.

Immediately after we find the wines of Piedmont, Tuscany, Trentino-Alto Adige, Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy – also thanks to its Franciacorta, which registers a + 10.3%.

WHAT IMPACT THE WAR WILL HAVE

In 2021, Russia represented the 12th destination market for exports of Italian wines – with 149 million euros, equal to 2.1% of the total exported wines.

The fourth package of sanctions decided by the EU against Moscow has also included wines in the list of goods that are forbidden to sell, supply, transfer or export, directly or indirectly; this prohibition, however, applies to goods whose value exceeds 300 euros. Therefore the effects should be partially mitigated by the minimum threshold value, however, it cannot be excluded that among the various retaliations of the Kremlin there will not in the future be the decision to adopt a ban on imports of products below this threshold.

But apart from exports, the effects of the war between Russia and Ukraine are reflected both from the point of view of the supply of raw materials (above all aluminum and fertilizers ) and from an energy point of view for the production of glass and paper for bottles, labels and cartons for packaging.

The repercussions of these additional costs, the report reports, are beginning to be glimpsed, but it will be the duration of the conflict that will determine the true extent of its effects on the sector's performance.
