How the Spanish Navantia sprinted in Saudi Arabia

Within Saudi defense circles there are rumors about the potential signing of a new contract with Navantia for another batch of surface ships. The article by Giuseppe Gagliano

Saudi Military Industries (SAMI) and the Saudi Ministry of Defense are currently focusing on joint shipbuilding work with Spanish firm Navantia SA as similar efforts with French naval defense firm Naval Group are mired in unresolved technology transfer issues ( ToT).

SAMI and the Saudi Ministry of Defense are pleased with the rapid progress and the ToT with Navantia SA regarding the corvette construction program.

Note that the collaboration was initiated with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the World Defense Show (WDS) held in Riyadh from 6 to 9 March 2022.

The program is in its final stages and foresees the delivery of a total of five Avante 2200 multi-role corvettes to the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF).

Additionally, there is growing consideration within Saudi defense circles over the potential signing of a new contract with Navantia SA for another batch of surface vessels.
Specifically, both SAMI and the Saudi Ministry of Defense are satisfied with the level of technology transfer offered by the Spanish shipbuilder, in particular with the custom-designed HAZEM naval combat management system.

As a result, the SAMI-Navantia Naval Industries joint venture will now focus on new surface vessel projects and prospects for continuing the expansion of the RSNF fleet.
