How to help the automotive sector in Italy

The government's commitment to an industrial policy protocol with Stellantis that focuses on the increase in production and responses to employment is positive. The speech by Roberto Benaglia, Fim Cisl general secretary, and Ferdinando Uliano, Fim Cisl national secretary

We appreciated the summons that Minister Urso made yesterday to the trade union organizations on Stellantis, with the right involvement of the Confederations, and we also appreciated the layout that the ministry and the minister gave to the meeting.

The government's objective, which we support, is to arrive at a protocol for a real industrial policy action with the Stellantis Group, which considers the automotive sector to be the fundamental basin for relaunching industry in this country.

To this end, it is essential to refinance the multi-year automotive fund with additional resources and block the directive on Euro 7 engines in Europe.

In our opinion, the Protocol must aim at a real trend reversal in relation to the presence of the Stellantis Group in Italy, two years after its birth, ensuring that in our country the Group is committed as a protagonist, not only as a market, but above all in the development of productions. Like Fim Cisl we have underlined that it will be important in this Protocol to produce binding and concrete actions regarding Stellantis' investments in Italy and the maintenance of research and development capabilities regarding the car of the future.

It is equally important that each production site has its own assigned mission within the future of the Group at a global level, including mechanical and commercial vehicle activities, as well as strategic alliances with ACC for the construction of the gigafactory in Termoli which must not only be confirmed, but accelerated.

Furthermore, it is very important that after assigning production platforms to each assembly site, these commitments translate into new models and growing volumes and employment. We share the government's goal of aiming for a pact that over time will lead to a trend reversal to produce 1 million cars in our country, making Italy once again an important competitor in the automotive industry of the future and within the Stellantis world.

With this in mind, we believe it is important to ensure Stellantis' commitments to components and related industries, for its transition and accompanied management.

The Government needs to co-finance the future of Stellantis with the conditionality of government commitments and investments and co-financing aimed at positive employment results. We need to obtain employment benefits not only by saturating current employment but by providing for a real generational turnover and with it a revival of the quality of employment in the Stellantis car factories.

Lastly, we underline that the construction of a Protocol is an important fact, not only an institutional responsibility but also one of the country's industrial policy and that as far as the Fim Cisl is concerned, given the importance of the issues in the field, we are absolutely ready and interested in cooperating and assuming our responsibilities for a pact that relaunches Stellantis and the car in Italy.
