I'll tell you about the young Calabrian lion Antonio Catricalà

“Thoughtful when and how much was needed, Antonio Catricalà was of great decision-making promptness. An instant manager ". The memorial signed by Corrado Calabrò, former Agcom president

News that leaves you astonished: Antonio Catricalà took his own life! But how, he so resolute, so serene, so committed!

Graduated with honors at the age of 22 from the La Sapienza University of Rome, university research fellow by merit, winner at 24 of the competition in the judiciary, then the one for State lawyer and the very strict one at the State Council. The first to talk to me about this brilliant young man from Catanzaro was the president Annibale Marini: a young Calabrian lion!

In 1981 the minister Antonio Ruberti, former rector of Sapienza, wanted him as head of the Cabinet at the newly created Ministry of the University; and this already suggests what esteem he enjoyed in the university world. Catricalà did not disappoint expectations: despite being his first post of high administration, he showed maturity, a sense of institutions, pragmatism.

He then had various other similar posts, including as undersecretary to the presidency of the Council and as deputy minister for economic development. But the most demanding, in my personal experience, was that of secretary general to the presidency of the Council: one of the places where you work the most, and often frantically, to deal with crucial and pressing issues. Catricalà worked quickly without the smile ever leaving his lips.

Between one assignment and another I found Catricalà at the Council of State, in my Section. And there it was the sharpness of his juridical intelligence and his balance of judgment that came to the fore.

In 2005 Catricalà was appointed president of the Antitrust Authority, while I, in parallel, was appointed president of the Communications Guarantee Authority ( Agcom ). Two Authorities with partly overlapping competences that could have created problems but which, thanks to the excellent relationship between the two presidents, worked with harmonious synergy.

With Catricalà at the Antitrust, a new season opened in which companies had the impression of being carefully listened to when they put forward their reasons. Quite a few proceedings were closed satisfactorily with the acceptance of commitments by the companies, rather than with the imposition of sanctions.

The approach of the State to the citizens was important, achieved with the intensification and codification of the protection of consumers against all abusive practices carried out against them.

In 2014 Catricalà is a candidate for the position of constitutional judge, but the majority splits on his name; perhaps he was too prominent!

It is a turning point in the Catricalà course. He resigns as Section President of the Council of State and devotes himself to the profession of lawyer and university teaching. In the meantime, he was appointed president of Adr (Aeroporti di Roma); a company that in recent years, reversing the previous trend, has obtained recognition as one of the best airport management companies in Europe.

Thoughtful when and how much was needed, Antonio Catricalà was of great decision-making promptness. An instant manager, like Andrea Monitra and a few others.
