Leonardo, how Vitrociset will move

Leonardo, through its subsidiary Vitrociset, will develop the diagnostic infrastructures of the nuclear fusion Iter reactor. Here's how the former Finmeccanica subsidiary is doing

Leonardo, through its subsidiary Vitrociset, was awarded the tender announced by the Iter Organization for the development of the reactor diagnostic infrastructures and related engineering services.

In fact, since 2019, the Roman company that operates in the defense, security, space and air traffic services sectors is part of Leonardo (formerly Finmeccanica).

All the details on numbers and latest news from Vitrociset.

THE ITER PROJECT

The Iter project (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) concerns a nuclear fusion reactor in experimental form under construction in Cadarache, in the South of France.

As Leonardo's note explains, 35 countries are engaged in the construction of the largest Tokamak ever designed, a machine that must prove that fusion – the energy of the Sun and the stars – can be used for large-scale electricity production. , based on safe technologies and from renewable sources.

THE RESOURCES OF THE PROGRAM

To date, the program has received funding of over € 20 billion. As the note specifies, the primary goal is the ignition of the so-called first plasma in 2025.

THE INVOLVEMENT OF VITROCISET

In 2018 Vitrociset was also selected among the main industrial groups, working in control and robotics systems, to provide the "remote handling supervisory control system" for the Iter reactor. That is, it has undertaken the design, development, integration and commissioning of the system dedicated to the interface of all robotic equipment intended for plant maintenance, in order to ensure real-time communication with the central control system ( Codac).

WHAT THE CONTRACT INCLUDES

The contract provides for activities until 2026. These will be carried out by Vitrociset personnel, thanks to an international team that now numbers over 20 people, physicists and engineers, and which will grow further. The diagnostic work team works alongside Vitrociset personnel, involved in control systems, both at Iter and at the European program development support agency, Fusion For Energy (F4E).

THE CONSEQUENCES FOR VITROCISET

The award of this tender therefore allows Vitrociset to grow and consolidate its presence in the Big Science world. The company – reads the note – will continue in this way to support the activities for the ignition of the first plasma, which represents a global challenge to create a new energy production plant, based on renewable sources, able to guarantee safety. and reliability.

SUBSIDIARY COMPANY FROM LEONARDO SINCE 2019

Established in 1992 from the merger of Ciset and Vitroselenia, Vitrociset provides specialized services and solutions for complex systems in the defense and security, space, transport and Critical Infrastructure sectors.

On January 31, 2019, the closing of the acquisition of the total stake in Vitrociset by the former Finmeccanica took place.

In fact, on 9 August 2018, Leonardo exercised its pre-emption right on the last day as it is shareholder with 1.5% of Vitrociset, undermining the offer presented by Fincantieri and Mermec. ( Here the deepening of Start ).

Following the transaction, Leonardo now holds all of the shares in Vitrociset. The consideration paid for the transaction was 47 million euros (including the purchase of the shares of Vitrociset and the properties). Of these 27 million relating to the purchase of the Vitrociset shares and 19 million for the purchase of assets.

As stated in the 2019 financial report of the Piazza Monte Grappa group, the acquisition contributed to the strengthening of Leonardo in its core business of services, in particular Logistics, Simulation & Training and Space Operations, including the segment Space Surveillance & Tracking.

Vitrociset belongs to the coordination perimeter of Leonardo's Electronics Division.

ITS SPACE BUSINESS IS ALSO INGLOBE

As part of the acquisition of Vitrociset, we remind you that Leonardo also incorporated its space business and that of its subsidiaries (Vitrociset Belgium Sprl and Vitrociset France Sarl).

However, the space business of Vitrociset Spa and that of its subsidiaries has been carve-out in favor of the Space Alliance. That is the strategic partnership founded in 2005 between Leonardo and Thales. It includes two joint ventures: Telespazio (Leonardo 67%, Thales 33%) and Thales Alenia Space (Thales 67%, Leonardo 33%).

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR THE GREEN DATA CENTER OF POLIGRAFO DELLO STATO

In July 2019, precisely through the subsidiary Vitrociset, Leonardo was awarded the tender launched by the Istituto Poligrafico e Mint dello Stato for the supply and commissioning of a Green Data Center (GDC) solution for a value of approximately 11 million euros . The new plant will house the equipment necessary to ensure operational continuity including the Disaster Recovery of IT services provided by the Poligrafico dello Stato.

F-35 LOGISTICS SUPPORT AT THE VITROCISET PLANT IN CAPO SAN LORENZO

Finally, we recall that in 2014 Vitrociset signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Lockheed Martin relating to the start of production of 54 Carts as part of the F-35 program .

Italy is a second-level partner of the Jsf Lightining II program, created in cooperation by the United States. The Italian F-35s leave the assembly line of the Faco di Cameri, the plant managed by Leonardo and used to assemble F-35s for Italy and the Netherlands. The trolleys (Carts) for the logistical support of fifth generation fighters are built in the Vitrociset plant in Capo San Lorenzo, Sardinia. These are two different types of Ground Support Equipment: the Power Cart and the Air Conditioning Cart, which will respectively provide electricity and air conditioning to the aircraft on the ground even in the most extreme weather conditions.
