Leonardo, what Telespazio will do with the space branch of Vitrociset

From 1 March, the space activities of Vitrociset, purchased in 2019 by the former Finmeccanica group, will flow into Telespazio (a joint venture of Leonardo and Thales).

Telespazio (joint venture between Leonardo 67% and Thales 33%) acquires the space activities of Vitrociset.

In fact, last December the European Commission approved the transfer of Vitrociset Space Business to Leonardo and Thales.

We remind you that since 2019 the Roman company that operates in the defense, security, space and air traffic services sectors is part of Leonardo (formerly Finmeccanica). ( Here the deepening of Start ).

From 1 March, therefore, the space activities of Vitrociset converge in Telespazio, but the two companies had already collaborated for years in various space programs for Italy and Europe.

All the details on the operation.

TELESPAZIO ACQUIRES THE SPACE ACTIVITIES OF VITROCISET

The operation – the note reports – allows Telespazio to further strengthen itself in strategic sectors such as that of space operations, in particular in the Galileo program, in the ground segment of launchers, in radar and optical tracking systems and in weather systems to support space launches, in particular for the Vega program, and in engineering and operational support services for the activities of the European Space Agency (ESA).

THE GOAL OF THE EU ANTITRUST

As we said, last December the European Commission approved, in accordance with the EU merger regulation, the transfer of Vitrociset Space Business to Leonardo and Thales through their joint venture Telespazio, based in Italy.

WHAT VITROCISET SPACE BUSINESS DOES

Vitrociset Space Business provides engineering, integration, operational management, maintenance and logistics services for ground segment solutions for space systems.

From today, around 300 Vitrociset Space Business employees, mainly engineers and technicians, will work for Telespazio. The joint venture will therefore be able to consolidate its offer portfolio with new services and qualified skills.

NOW IN TELESPAZIO

With 4000 employees worldwide, Telespazio operates in the supply of space services (aid for the launch of satellites and development of ground elements); telecommunication systems.

The acquisition of Vitrociset's Spazio business unit also allows Telespazio to expand its geographical presence in countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands. And to strengthen it in French Guiana, at the European spaceport of Kourou.

Finally, we recall that the European Commission recently selected Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space (jv between Thales 67% and Leonardo 33%) together with 7 other European companies for the design, development and launch of a European-owned space communication system. . The project will compete with SpaceX's Starlink, Amazon Kuiper and OneWeb
