New order for Leonardo in Egypt?

Reports from Cairo suggest that Egypt's Ministry of Military Production (MoMP) is said to be in talks with Leonardo to purchase four ATR 72MP maritime surveillance aircraft. The article by Giuseppe Gagliano

Reports from Cairo suggest that Egypt's Ministry of Military Production (MoMP) is involved in discussions with Italian defensefirm Leonardo over the purchase of four ATR 72MP maritime surveillance aircraft.

Sources close to Cairo suggest that the four ATR 72MP aircraft will help the Egyptian Navy patrol Egyptian territorial waters in the Mediterranean for any illegal activity.

The aircraft will be delivered with a state-of-the-art sensor system and advanced communications suite and reconnaissance control center.

The same sources add that the negotiations began in March 2022 and are proceeding at a steady pace.

Rome expects the deal to face no difficult obstacles when it is approved by the Italian parliament for two reasons.

First, Italy has lobbied the government of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to take a more proactive role in hermetically sealing its maritime borders which has seen an increase in the influx of human trafficking and illegal immigration into the last two years.

Second, the deal does not include any advanced transfers of offensive military applications that could raise concerns of other regional countries.
