Not just WeTaxi, MooneyGo and UnipolMovie: how mobility apps move in Italy with Pnnr funds

What is the MaaS project and what do the MaaS operators, among which there is also Aci Infomobility (led by Geronimo La Russa). All the details

Rome, Naples and Turin are the three leaders of the project financed with PNRR funds which aims to integrate multiple modes of transport, such as e-bikes, buses, car sharing, public and private transport, through " digital intermediation platforms ", which combine various functionality and guarantee different travel alternatives. The purpose of the MaaS project is to allow users to plan, book and pay for more services based on their needs.

MOBILITY AS SERVICE: THE 40 MILLION EURO PROJECT

The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) has allocated a total of 40 million euros to the project, in addition to 16.9 million allocated by the Complementary Fund. Furthermore, “Mobility as a Service for Italy” is part of the broader “Digital Italy 2026” strategy and includes 3 lines of intervention:

  • Experiment with MaaS in the territories;
  • Create an open platform (called “Data Sharing and Service Repository Facilities – DS&SRF);
  • Strengthen the digital dimension of public transport for the diffusion of MaaS in the selected territories.

THE MAAS TRIAL IN ROME

The trial began in Rome last July and will involve 10 thousand citizens, by November, who can apply through the questionnaire published on romamobilita.it. In a single platform, a smartphone app, "experimental citizens" can manage travel around the city, integrating public transport and shared vehicles, paying in full electronically.

The application was developed by the collaboration between Roma Servizi per la Mobilità and the digital tech company Almaviva. “Service mobility, so-called MaaS, is among the new mobility models that are establishing themselves globally – said Smeraldo Fiorentini, General Director of Transportation & Logistics Almaviva -. The objective, especially in large metropolitan areas – he explains – is to encourage the use of collective means of transport that are more sustainable for the city, and therefore for the environment, instead of the private car”.

The experiment involved residents, students and tourists, following the guidelines dictated by the MIT, and the eight MaaS operators took part: Aci Infomobility, Envision, urbanNext, MooneyGo, Tabnet, UnipolMove, Movevision, Wetaxi. The experimentation will last a year, and the platform should be available to all citizens by the Jubilee of 2025. But let's see who the MaaS operators are and what they do.
