Not only Eni and Enel, here is the pandemic effect for listed energy companies. Report

What emerges from the sixth edition of the "Report on the financial statements of the Energy Companies 2014-2020" created by the CoMar study center, in the comparison between the end of 2020 and 2019.

A decrease in turnover of 71 billion euros, about a quarter of the previous year (-24.6%); losses of over 2.5 billion euros; debts increased by 4% and reaching 168 billion; the only positive parameter represented by the maintenance of employment levels (+ 0.2%).

This is what emerges from the sixth edition of the "Report on the financial statements of the Energy Companies 2014-2020" created by the CoMar study center, in the comparison between the end of 2020 and 2019.

“The sector was undoubtedly among the most affected by the pandemic, considering the blocking or reduction of production activities, transport, private consumption; aggravating already lackluster trends in recent years, for companies called to a transition that requires high investments, staff reorganization, technological push, new business models in line with different sensitivities and customer demands, with the uncertainties of the regulatory framework and markets international raw materials ”, underlines the study center in its conclusions.

The Report considered the companies, under Italian law, that produce, distribute and sell both electricity and gas, as well as oil and fuels, comparing the trend both year on year and in the seven of the period between 2014 and 2020. The analysis highlights, in particular, the total turnover, in 2020, was 218.8 billion euros, losing a good 71.4 billion (-24.6%) compared to 290.2 in 2019; and down by 28.7% on the record of 306.9 billion reached in 2014.

LISTED COMPANIES

There are 18 listed energy companies as of December 31, 2020: A2a, Acea, Alerion Clean Power, Ascopiave, Ecosuntek, Edison, Elettra Investimenti (revoked June 4, 2021), Enel, Eni, Erg, Falck Renewables, Gas Plus , Hera, Iren, Italgas, Saras, Snam, Terna.

CAPITALIZATION

At the end of 2020, their capitalization on Borsa Italiana was 170 billion euros, 28.3% of the total capitalization (606.5 billion); with the Enel share as the absolute largest, for a capitalization more than double the second (Intesa SanPaolo).

THE INCOME STATEMENT

“By segmenting all the energy companies, it can be seen that, for the 2020 income statement, the worst results were recorded for those mainly engaged in the extraction, processing, distribution of oils and fuels; compared to the best, achieved, first of all, by network operators and, then, by those producers and sellers more oriented towards renewables or the digitization of customer relations ”, reads the report of the study center.

THE CONCLUSIONS OF THE REPORT

Conclusion: “If 2020, for the sector, was the year of the pandemic, whose future trend remains unknown, 2021 is envisioned as the year of recovery. This will, above all, be a prerequisite for that inevitable energy and environmental transition facilitated by the Pnrr-Next Generation Eu and by the National Plan for complementary investments, by a renewed planning, by the desire to overcome persistent and unjustified regulatory and administrative obstacles, by a greater attention of public opinion on these issues; alongside, on the negative side, tensions on prices in procurement and the consequences on bills, especially for families, SMEs and energy-hungry people. Years, however, of narrow paths ".
