Peace made on patents between Huawei and Amazon?

Despite political and technological tensions between America and China, Huawei and Amazon have reached a patent licensing agreement. All the details

Chinese telecommunications company Huawei and US technology company Amazon today announced the signing of a multi-year patent licensing agreement that resolves their disputes.

Details are not known. However, Alan Fan, head of Huawei's intellectual property rights department, said the Chinese company had canceled lawsuits filed against Amazon in Germany related to patented Wi-Fi and video playback technologies.

POLITICAL TENSIONS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND CHINA

Fan added that the agreement shows how "American and Chinese companies, and companies from other regions, are cooperating without limitations on patent standards and licensing." This is a politically relevant statement, considering that the United States has expelled Chinese companies – such as ZTE and Huawei itself – from its telecommunications market for national security reasons: they fear that these companies may collect sensitive data Americans and pass them on to the government and military of China. In 2019, Donald Trump's administration imposed sanctions on Huawei, preventing it from purchasing US technology .

NOT JUST AMAZON: HUAWEI ALSO AGREES WITH VIVO

In addition to the one with Amazon, Huawei also announced a patent cross-licensing agreement with Vivo, a Chinese company that produces smartphones, relating to communication technologies, including 5G. Huawei already has similar agreements with other Chinese mobile device manufacturers, namely Xiaomi and Oppo.

Huawei's smartphone business has been hurt by American restrictions on technology sourcing. The company is trying to regain market share in this segment after breaking away from the Honor brand, focusing on higher-end devices: for example the infamous Mate 60 Pro, which contains a microchip that in theory it shouldn't have (i.e. a processor seven-nanometer advanced built by SMIC , suspected of having circumvented American sanctions on technological components).
