Goodmorning everyone,

First of all, I would like to thank you journalists for everything you do for democracy and freedom. I would also like to thank the parliamentary press in particular for their work this year. The press conferences were a very important occasion to respond to your comments, your criticisms and your concerns. And then also and above all to try to tell the government action to you and also to all citizens. I hope you found these press conferences as useful as I did.

Today I will only give a brief introduction to leave as much room as possible for your questions.

The arrival of the Omicron variant, which scientists tell us is much more contagious than its predecessors, has opened a new phase in the pandemic. Tomorrow a control room will be held to decide what to do on the basis of the epidemiological framework. And here I would like to give the first message of this introduction: vaccines remain the best defense tool against the virus.

Keep in mind that three-quarters of the deaths are unvaccinated. Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, our country has administered over 106 million doses. On February 13, Italy was the last among the large European countries as regards the administration of first doses. Today around 80% of the population has received at least one dose, a higher proportion than Great Britain, France and Germany. We gave 15.6 million third doses. I urge all citizens to continue getting vaccinated and taking the third dose. Today this is the priority.

Scientific evidence tells us that the vaccine works very well, even against the new variants. The vaccination campaign was essential to revive the economy.
The growth at the end of the year will settle as I said above 6%, after a decline of almost 9% last year. Employment has also started up again: in the third quarter of this year there were 500,000 employees. in addition, 308 thousand fewer unemployed than in the same period of 2020. It is true that much of this employment is not permanent, but is on fixed-term contracts. But there was an increase.

The recovery also allowed us to have an improvement in public accounts. We expect the public debt-to-GDP ratio to begin to decline this year. The government remains ready to support the economy in the event of a slowdown. And this is the second message I want to give you in this introduction. The main challenge remains that of increasing the long-term growth rate and resolving the structural weaknesses of our economy, starting with geographical gender and generational inequalities.

The National Recovery and Resilience Plan is central to this strategy. Today I can tell you that we have achieved all 51 objectives and that the Commission is currently discussing the signing of what is called an 'operational agreement', which is the next step in achieving the 51 objectives. Then the period of 1-2 months opens, the period of dialogue with the Commission, before granting the tranche of the envisaged loans. So we have achieved all 51 objectives that we had agreed with the Commission and this is the third message: Italy, the regions, the municipalities and the government are moving with determination and strength. The process is long and complex but, at the same time, there is to be satisfied with what has been done this year and above all there is no reason to fear that it will not be possible to do well in the future as well.

Among the various initiatives we have undertaken, there is the Italian Space strategy . I want to say a few words about this initiative, which in total commits four and a half billion euros . Italy will launch the largest European constellation of Earth observation satellites, in low orbit, important for environmental and climate protection and also for developing innovative services for businesses. The name of the constellation will be proposed by young and young Italians, with a competition at the beginning of 2022, and we will let our astronauts lead by Samantha Cristoforetti choose it, who will fly back into space, again next year.
