The estimate comes from the new 'flash survey' conducted by the ISS and the Ministry of Health together with the regional laboratories and the Bruno Kessler Foundation. As of 18 February, the prevalence of the English variant of the virus was 54.0% with values oscillating, however, between the individual regions between 0% and 93.3%, while for the Brazilian one it was 4.3% (0% -36.2%) and for the South African by 0.4% (0% -2.9%). In total, 21 Regions / PPAAs and a total of 101 laboratories participated in the survey, and 1296 sequencing was performed.

The survey on the diffusion of variants highlights an anticipated and very worrying fact: the English variant is becoming the "prevalent" one in the country, says the ISS, and in consideration of its greater transmissibility "it is necessary to strengthen / increase the mitigation measures in all the country in containing and reducing the spread of the virus, maintaining or rapidly bringing the Rt values back to values below 1 and the incidence to values capable of guaranteeing the possibility of systematic tracking of all cases ". But what is alarming is the spread of the other variant, the Brazilian, so far more limited. In fact, a “clear geographical expansion from the Umbrian epicenter to regions such as Lazio and Tuscany of the Brazilian variant emerges, which must be contrasted with the maximum mitigation measures”.
