Tangentopoli forever? When is the intellectual-journalistic establishment also put on trial?

Tangentopoli forever? When is the intellectual-journalistic establishment also put on trial?

If after 30 years a Tangentopoli appears every day, we need to ask ourselves some questions. Francesco Cundari's italics taken from his newsletter La Linea

Even today, newspapers offer a wide choice of judicial reporting. After the events in Piedmont and Puglia (in constant evolution) which affected the centre-left, the investigation into the Sicilian junta also arrived, settling the score with the centre-right.

The leader of the 5 Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, appears concerned about "a phase that reminds us of Mani Pulite, where scandals began to emerge and the politics of the time and the ruling class did not understand that there was a widespread disease". Beyond the inevitable painful pose of a statesman worried about the fate of the country, it is clear that he hopes for it with all his being, and God forbid.

The so-called moral question, which everyone talks about, is the only real social reason for his movement. So it's not clear why Elly Schlein is so upset. A background story from Corriere della Sera attributes the following words to the secretary of the Democratic Party, which she allegedly addressed to the managers closest to her regarding the Grillino leader: «He has accused us of many things in this period, but I have never accused him of his government with Salvini and the security decrees and I won't do it now either."

Evidently he's doing it, and it's hard to understand why he shouldn't. Or otherwise, if Schlein, like many of his predecessors, decided to turn a blind eye to the nature of Conte and his party, what is he complaining about. In short, one of two things: if you think that he is the leader of a populist movement which tends to be right-wing and which has always won votes with anti-political (and often anti-PD) campaigns, it would be appropriate to fight him, rather than building broad camps and strategic alliances . If, however, he has decided to form an alliance regardless, who does he want to blame, and what does he still want to be surprised about?

If anything, the Democratic Party should complain about all that large company of journalists, commentators and intellectuals who, with each new scandal, that is practically every day, starts again with the refrain of the new moral question and the new Tangentopoli. And no one wonders why, thirty years after the original Tangentopoli, we continue to be amazed daily by the discovery of some of its new subsidiaries, especially at a local level.

In 1992, the same tour company, which includes nine tenths of our intellectual-journalistic establishment, attributed the reasons to the corrupt party system, to the deplored First Republic and to its "consociativism", considered in turn a consequence of the electoral law proportional representation, immediately abolished by referendum, and of an overly rigid institutional system, which from then on we have undermined in various ways without however anyone managing to impose its new and definitive reform (and in fact we are still here discussing it).

In the meantime, in addition to proportional representation, the entire political system of the time has collapsed. The therapy was very hard, but we followed it to the end (for reasons of space I will not dwell here on its various economic and social implications), especially with regard to municipalities and regions, still held up as examples of that reform of institutions and politics that would like to be extended to a national level (the infamous "mayor of Italy").

It is about time that many illustrious doctors and diligent nurses, instead of continuing to prescribe increasingly massive doses of the same therapy, began to talk to us a little about the results obtained so far, and take their share of responsibility.
