The climate is warming in the Sole 24 Ore: cuts and appeals

What happens to the Sole 24 Ore? Facts, numbers, appeals and rumors

The editorial climate is warming up at the Sole 24 Ore.

According to rumors coming from the Confindustria newspaper directed by Fabio Tamburini , a conviction is emerging among the colleagues of the economic-financial newspaper: about 15 early retirements are ready, other releases by 2023 and targeted cuts on individual personnel cost items.

In the meantime, an appeal letter has arrived in the e-mails of the newspaper's journalists, signed by leading journalists of the Sole 24 Ore who have important responsibilities in the daily newspaper directed by Tamburini: Marco Alfieri, Marco Ferrando, Attilio Geroni, Marco Mariani and Giorgio Santilli.

Here is the text of the open letter.

Dear colleagues and dear colleagues,

this letter is the result of a dialogue that has been going on for a few weeks and responds to the need, and the urgency we feel, to rekindle a debate open to all members of the Sole 24 Ore.

We do not intend to interfere in the trade union dynamics. Rather, after sharing a certain unease and concern, we feel the responsibility to offer some insights that we draw from our daily work. In an attempt to enhance the many resources we have and which make our "home" a unique pool of skills.

We want to start from here.

There is a great soul in Sole 24 Ore: the newspaper of economics and finance, businesses, professions and new professions. The journal of rigorous information and reliable answers to readers. A newspaper that explains the facts, generates culture, service and debate. Who has always thought about the development of Italy from the perspective of Europe. Which has 156 years of history and continues to renew itself, from the digital transformation to the new format of the paper newspaper.

The results of the last year, achieved in prohibitive conditions through the effort and contribution of everyone, the first editors, confirm the value and potential of the Sole 24 Ore brand.

Yet, even if it has not died out, this great soul has been struggling for at least a decade with a sort of slavery of emergency: an insidious enemy that drives everyone away from the search for a shared and winning perspective.

For years the management of Il Sole 24 Ore seems to have lost the ambition to build its own future. That is: a wide-ranging strategy that looks to the long term, to development and innovation. Without getting lost in sterile and harmful contrasts.

The newspaper has weakened its own reflection on identity, with the risk of weakening products, demotivating people and projecting the group onto a path of progressive wear.

All this occurs, paradoxically, in a historical moment in which Italy faces the test of a new great reconstruction. Of this season – which promises enormous journalistic-editorial opportunities – Il Sole 24 Ore is called to be a critical, authoritative and passionate witness.

Precisely in order to exercise this role, in the wake of its best tradition, we are convinced that the newspaper must first of all get in tune with the spirit of the times: play as a team, mobilize all energy and rethink not in the perspective of a semester but in that of the near future.

There is a need to immediately reactivate a dialogue – each with their own role and skills – which does not avoid any of the problems on the table, including the sustainability of the income statement, but addresses them within a framework of relaunch and editorial transformation. This is a prospect that the new industrial plan cannot ignore.

Convinced that it can be a virtuous method, we invite everyone to a discussion phase on some issues that we consider unavoidable such as overcoming the paper-web dichotomy, with a reorganization in a digital key (integration and strengthening of desks) so far sketched but not realized; such as the quality of the contents produced and their declination in the various platforms; the management of flows and workloads, taking advantage of the smart working experience . And again: the drive towards a true process of generational renewal in order to enrich the newspaper, in line with the values of the Sole 24 Ore; and the in-depth knowledge of our audiences, necessary for the consolidation of recent successful initiatives, and the creation of new innovative products. A mission that cannot be achieved if not through continuous training, capable of nourishing sensitivity, skills and new professional paths.

We are sure that we are not the only ones to share this reading, and we hope that our reflection will be enriched by the contribution of many to build, on these foundations, a phase of lasting development. Together, of course, with all the components of the Sole 24 Ore.

This opportunity should not be wasted. Getting lost in divisions or unilateral initiatives would risk producing, especially at this stage, irreparable damage for which we would all pay the bill.
