The real news in Fedriga's victory in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Fedriga's victory in Friuli Venezia Giulia marks the recovery of the League and beyond. Paola Sacchi's note

The reconfirmed Northern League governor Massimiliano Fedriga flies (the first in Friuli Venezia Giulia re-elected for a second term) with 64 percent and his list at 17.7. Clear victory of the center-right, within which there is a rebalancing with respect to the exploits of FdI also here at the September Policies, when it had more than doubled the allies.

The League, in line with what has already happened, albeit to a lesser extent, in Lombardy, is starting to grow again and in Friuli it is back as the first party with 19 percent, Fdi triples and still more the votes of the regional ones than 5 years ago. But in a strategic region of the North-East there is not that breakthrough at 30 per cent which opinion polls and a dominant media narrative had predicted in recent months as an automatism in the wake of the result of the Policies.

Matteo Salvini proudly claims "the splendid result with the League as the first party ever and the great affirmation of the Fedriga list". The Northern League leader, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport underlines: "Our good work at national and territorial level has been rewarded". The satisfaction of Salvini is evident, but diplomatically contained, whose leadership had been liquidated for months on the waning avenue by a certain media narrative. League and governor's list together make up nearly 37 percent. And the League surpasses the Fedriga list. Forza Italia holds, with 6.7 effectively confirming the result of the Lombardy and Lazio Regions, with which in Friuli it takes three times the votes of the Third Pole, which stops at just over 2 percent, also surpassed by the list no-vax, and does not enter the regional council.

Carlo Calenda immediately recognizes defeat. Overall, the centre-right's victory is overwhelming. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Silvio Berlusconi congratulate Fedriga and underline the fact that "the good governance of the centre-right has been rewarded, after the victories between Lazio and Lombardy". Antonio Tajani, deputy premier, foreign minister, coordinator-vice president of FI, underlines the value of the test also for the national government.

The clear-cut defeat of the left certainly cannot be entirely entrusted to Elly Schlein, the new leader of the Democratic Party, in her electoral debut, who falls behind the result of Enrico Letta's Democratic Party, which had obtained 18.5 percent. But that gap of 35 percent, "an unprecedented success on the left", underlines Salvini, is remarkable and obviously cannot go unnoticed, because the defeat highlights a crucial issue for the left: the yellow-red alliance with the Five Stars does not reward, precisely that same alliance at the heart of Schlein's advent at the Nazarene. Lorenzo Pregliasco of You Trend points it out immediately on Twitter. He did not even reward former secretary Nicola Zingaretti, starting with Umbria, where in 2019, in a different context because that was the Region of the sensational change after 60 years of red government, the current Northern League president Donatella Tesei, candidate of all the cdx, flew to the left with more than 20 percent.

History then repeated itself in Liguria, in Calabria, in Lombardy. And finally with an unprecedented gap in Friuli Venezia Giulia, where the pentastellati are at an all-time low. Yellow-red does not go on territories. A cycle that begins in Umbria and repeats itself up to Friuli. Two realities that, in the very rapid courses and appeals of Italian politics, see the League in the center-right, albeit with different dimensions and contexts, the protagonist. But, albeit with the confirmation of a good result for FdI, the rebalancing of forces within the center-right – even with the constant hold of FI – to whose government there are no alternatives at national level, can only play in favor of stability of the same coalition.
