The somewhat difficult 2022 of BMW (but not for the extra luxury of Rolls-Royce)

Even the leading manufacturer in the premium sector has experienced supply difficulties, linked to the latest Chinese lockdowns and obviously to the war in Ukraine. He doesn't stop running Rolls-Royce. BMW's 2022 numbers

The BMW Group, after having recently ended up in the media spotlight for the innovations presented at CES 2023 , announces that it has delivered, in the 12 months just archived, a total of 2,399,636 cars, with a drop of 4.8% compared to 2021, a year which was also characterized by the presence of pandemic aftermaths in the main markets. These numbers are global, i.e. they concern all the brands in the family: BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce.

WHAT CAUSES THE FLEXURE RECORDED BY BMW IN 2022

In short, even the leading company in the premium sector has experienced significant difficulties attributable to supply limits (connected both to the chip crisis and to the increase in the prices of some raw materials), to the latest Chinese lockdowns and obviously to having lost the market Russia following the war in Ukraine.

In short, the problems that the BMW Group ran into in 2022 are those that have put most players in the automotive market in difficulty, but regardless of these, the company led by Oliver Zipse still maintains its first position in the global premium segment.

THE PERFORMANCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL BRANDS

Coming to retail, in 2022 BMW alone sold 2,100,692 units with a decrease of -5.1%. However, the Bavarian company underlines the new all-time high – coinciding with the celebrations of the first fiftieth anniversary of the brand – for BMW M which recorded a growth of +8.4% compared to the previous year, with the sale of 177,257 units.

Mini placed 292,923 in the same period, totaling a net -3%, despite the strong increase in electrified models sold (14.3%) which reached 60,839 vehicles, equal to approximately 21% of total sales. The Mini Cooper SE is the brand's best-selling model in 2022: 43,744 copies worldwide, an increase of 25.5% compared to 2021.

It is nothing new, however, that the super-luxury segment has not stopped growing since the pandemic. And so here Rolls-Royce has once again achieved another sales record in its 118-year history, with 6,021 cars delivered and a +7.8% on 2021, also thanks to the Bespoke offer which allows customers, against an expense average of about 500 thousand, to pack a unique Rolls-Royce.

THE ELECTRIC SEGMENT

As for the new engines, BMW's 2022 saw BEV registrations grow by 107.7%, while with reference to 2023 it aims to reach 15% of total sales with fully electric models, according to what Pieter Nota , a member of the board of management of BMW AG responsible for customers, brands and sales.

“Our solid range of products is the best response to a challenging environment and has enabled us to double our sales of electric vehicles again in 2022 – underlined Nota – and we are confident that we can build on this success in 2023, as we continue to record particularly high orders for our all-electric models.”

At BMW alone, sales of electrified vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) in 2022 increased by +35.6% compared to the previous year, with 372,956 deliveries. And the Bavarian House naturally hopes for a similar trend in 2023, also thanks to the high number of orders for models such as the BMW X1, the iX1, the i4, the iX and the i7, pending the arrival of the i5 on the market.
