This is where nuclear waste storage can arise. Map Sogin

All suitable areas, region by region, to build the national nuclear waste repository

67 eligible areas in 7 regions. With the clearance of the Ministry of Development and the Ministry of the Environment, the state company Sogin has obtained the green light for the publication of the National Charter of potentially suitable areas (Cnapi) to host the storage of nuclear waste.

The construction of the depot and the adjoining technology park, for a total of 150 hectares (110 for the depot and 40 for the technology park), an overall investment of approximately 900 million euros is expected and provides economic benefits for the area that will host it.

All the details.

AREAS SUITABLE TO HOST THE DEPOSIT OF NUCLEAR WASTE

Let's start with the list of eligible areas region by region, outlined on the Cnapi map.

IDENTIFICATION OF AREAS FOR THE DEPOSIT OF NUCLEAR WASTE

The areas were identified by Sogin after a "complex selection process on a national scale", based on the "location criteria established by ISIN (Inspectorate for National Security and Radiation Protection), which allowed to discard the areas that they met certain safety requirements for the protection of man and the environment. The exclusion criteria were followed by those of in-depth analysis, through specific investigations and assessments on the areas that were not excluded ".

ONE COLOR FOR THE DEGREE OF SUITABILITY

The suitable areas chosen by Sogin are not all the same. And also in this case the colors come into play: emerald green for the areas with the highest score, pea green with a good score, light blue for the islands and yellow for the possible but less suitable areas.

There are only 12 emerald green areas, 11 in light green, and all the others are light blue and yellow.

GO TO CONSULTATION ON THE DEPOSIT OF NUCLEAR WASTE

The presentation of the map now starts the "phase of consultation of documents for the duration of two months, at the end of which the national seminar will be held over the four months following". There will be a real public debate in which local authorities, trade associations, trade unions, universities and research bodies will take part, during which all aspects will be studied, including the possible economic and territorial development benefits connected to the construction of the works .

900 MILLION INVESTMENT

An expense of 900 million euros is foreseen for the Depot and the Technology Park, which will be "taken from the components of the electricity bill paid by consumers", writes the Corriere della Sera.

THE BENEFITS FOR THE TERRITORY

The construction of the repository and the technology park will bring important benefits to the territory that will host it.

"Legislative decree no.31 of 2010, in order to maximize the socio-economic and employment effects linked to the project, recognizes an economic contribution to the territory that will host the National Deposit and Technological Park, according to procedures that the Local Authorities concerned will regulate through the stipulation of a specific agreement with Sogin ”, reads the website of the national deposit.

"All the countries in which the construction of radioactive waste deposits is underway have adopted a system of direct and indirect benefits for the communities hosting these plants, not only as compensation for the portion of the territory that will be occupied for a long period , but also to recognize a form of added value to communities that accept to participate in the creation of an essential service for the development of the country. The contribution will be formalized with a decree of the Minister of Economic Development, in agreement with the Minister of the Environment and Protection of the Territory and the Sea and with the Minister of Economy and Finance ”.
