What does the stop to V6 diesel engines in the Stellantis factory in Cento mean?

Starting next year, the Stellantis plant in Cento will no longer produce endothermic engines for cars. The details of the agreement signed with the unions

The V6 Stellantis diesel engines built in Cento, in the province of Ferrara, mainly destined for the US market, go out. It is the first tangible effect of the ecological transition which, in the automotive sector, means above all the disposal of the old endothermic. And the divestment inevitably brings with it redundancies. There is talk of over half a million fewer places throughout the Old Continent ( here the numbers of Uilm on the impact in our country).

THE NUMBERS OF THE STELLANTIS PLANT IN CENTO

In the last few hours, the automotive group led by CEO Carlos Tavares (who, not later than two weeks ago, at the Paris auto show, had predicted "serious social damage" resulting from the stop to registrations of petrol and diesel cars from 2035 ), announced that it had reached an agreement, after several months of negotiations that also involved the Region (concerned about the employment impact and the lack of a qualified induced by companies in the territories straddling the provinces of Ferrara, Bologna and Modena), with the Italian trade unions for a reduction of about 300 factory personnel.

Currently 720 blue overalls work on this Emilian site, up from 1,500 a few years ago (the first major weight loss in 2016). The 300 involved in the surplus are precisely those used in the construction of the engine which will cease to be produced in 2023.

The 420 survivors will mainly deal with the production of industrial and marine engines. As for those who will be left at home, according to the agreements made with the unions, those who are less than 4 years after retirement will be entitled to a Naspi supplement offered by Stellantis, while the others will be located in the Maserati factory in Modena, where a new car painting line is about to be created.

Stellantis employees who will move from Cento to Modena will receive a one-off indemnity ranging from 7,500 to 10 thousand euros based on the distance from their place of residence to the Trident factory. In case of refusal, employees will be able to enjoy an incentive to leave (we are talking about figures that could reach 75 thousand euros) or to accompany retirement up to 48 months.

For its part, Maserati, although it certainly cannot absorb the entire workforce of Cento, recorded net revenues of € 630 million in the third quarter, an increase of 23% compared to the same period of 2021. In the calculation of the first 9 months of 2022, the Stellantis Group brand achieved net revenues of € 1.571 billion, compared to € 1.399 in the same period last year.

As for 2023, fans of the Trident will be able to celebrate the return of one of the icons of the brand – the GranTurismo – which will be offered with the V6 Nettuno engine and the 100% electric Folgore unit. In the middle of the year Maserati will also complete the expansion of the Grecale range with the debut of the 100% electric Folgore version and, thereafter, with the launch of the GranCabrio, also planned in this case with a V6 Nettuno engine and 100% electric Folgore.

AN R&D DEPARTMENT IN FERRARESE

The agreement saves a site considered historic from closure – born in the very early post-war period as VM Motori, by Vancini and Martelli, to build diesel engines for the agricultural sector right next to the Lamborghini plant – and allows the area to preserve a qualified area of Research and Development which will be the subject of significant investments focused on the market of the latest generation diesel engines for industrial, marine and power generation use, which presents a significant growth trend in the coming years, and which is opening up to hybrid and electrified solutions.

Cento's new business unit will develop this type of new solutions by advancing the hydrogen technology in which Stellantis already invests. To support this industrial growth, the company has provided training programs with the aim of retraining and improving the skills of its workers.
