What Fincantieri will do with Wsense

Fincantieri has signed an agreement with WSense, a deep tech company specialized in underwater monitoring and communication systems. All the details.

Fincantieri's underwater race continues.

The Trieste naval group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with WSense, a deep tech company specialized in underwater monitoring and communication systems, to start a collaboration in the Underwater Internet of Things (UloT) sector. The company headed by Pierroberto Folgiero announced this in a note.

Fincantieri aims "to develop joint projects in the field of underwater communications in both the defense and civil contexts" indicates the note.

This is the latest collaboration entered into by Fincantieri in the underwater sector: last 30 October the naval group and Leonardo signed a Memorandum of Understanding to define initiatives and developments linked to systems, including underwater drones, for the protection of critical underwater infrastructures.

The Memorandum with Wsense "confirms Fincantieri's role as one of the main catalysts of the underwater industry, a universe of 400 billion euros of potential business volume" commented Fincantieri CEO and CEO Pierroberto Folgiero.

All the details.

WHAT THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN FINCANTIERI AND WSENSE INVOLVES

As part of the agreement, the two companies will evaluate possible forms of cooperation in some areas, including underwater adaptive communications and the related multimodal network, the development of solutions for measuring the relative positioning of autonomously guided vehicles (unmanned) of surface and underwater and cloud solutions in the Defense sector, based on the experience already gained by WSense in the civil sector, also evaluating the participation of other specialized operators, the note indicates.

FINCANTIERI'S STRATEGY

“The Group, which has been building submarines for the Navy for over 100 years, has the objective of acting as a guide for the technological development of this new geopolitical domain, of great strategic importance, as also represented by the recent inauguration of the National Underwater Dimension . For this reason, we are very happy to start this collaboration with one of the main excellences of the national supply chain" added Folgiero.

WHAT THE ITALIAN STARTUP SPECIALIST IN UNDERWATER WIFI DOS

Wsense is a startup founded in 2017 by CEO Chiara Petrioli, full professor of computer engineering at La Sapienza University of Rome, it is a spin-off of the same University, and was accelerated in 2022 by EIT DIgital.

“In March 2022, WSense received the European Commission's Blueinvest Award in the Ocean Observation category for new products, technologies and AI-based solutions for ocean observation, collection and analysis of marine data” recalls Bebeez adding that “Also in 2022 it raised a seed round of 4 million euros, led by the Evoluzione Fund of CDP Venture Capital sgr, which in fact until now was the second largest shareholder in the scaleup with 6.68% of the capital after Petrioli (75.27% ) (see the Leanus report here, after registering for free) and with the senior partner and co-head of the Fund, Mario Scuderi, who has sat on the company's board since November 2022. The operation had not been communicated at the time" .

The Italian underwater WiFi specialist company now has over 50 employees and operates in Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom.

LEONARDO, ENI AND SAIPEM AMONG WSENSE CUSTOMERS

As we read on startupitalia , WSense has international customers and partners in various sectors, such as Leroy, Leonardo, AKER BP, Xylem, ENI, Saipem and the National Oceanography Centre.

THE POTENTIAL OF THE BLUE ECONOMY

The ultimate goal of WSense is to provide a communications infrastructure for the sustainable exploitation of ocean resources, risk mitigation and process optimization, contributing to the growth of the Blue Economy.

“This agreement with Fincantieri is very important in two respects” highlighted Chiara Petrioli, CEO of WSense: “On the one hand it confirms our technological leadership in the field of submarine wireless telecommunications. On the other hand, it positions WSense as an actor at the center of the Italian ecosystem of excellence for the creation of monitoring and control systems in the underwater domain. There is enormous potential linked to the Blue Economy, particularly in the sector of critical infrastructure protection. In this field, Italy with the National Underwater Dimension Pole has given substance to its strategic vision. WSense's solutions and technological development capacity, together with the desire of large players such as Fincantieri to create an ecosystem, can truly bring our country to the frontier of innovation and international leadership in the Internet of the seas."
