What happens between Nato and Zelensky

All the news on NATO and Ukraine after the words of President Zelensky. The point of Giuseppe Gagliano

It is difficult not to mention the first political failures by the current president of Ukraine on the one hand and difficult not to underline the position of the NATO countries of paralysis in the face of the Russian offensive on the other. Paralysis that also arises from the need to prevent direct intervention from laying the foundations for a conflict of a global nature.

In fact, it is no coincidence that Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that there is some hope of reaching a compromise as declared on the Russian television channel RBC.

But where does the turnaround , the political yielding of the current president of Ukraine come from?

From two simple reasons: firstly from the fact that NATO has not put in place the no fly zone over the skies of Ukraine as requested by the Ukrainian president and secondly from the fact that Ukraine is not a NATO country and cannot – at least at present – enter NATO. In fact, let us not forget that, during the video call with England and the representatives of the countries that are part of the Joint Expeditionary Force, the Ukrainian president with regret acknowledged the impossibility that NATO countries accept his proposal.

Starting from this change of posture, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that Moscow will consider a "compromise" which consists in making Ukraine a neutral state comparable to Sweden or Austria, which despite being both members of the 'EU and equipped with military forces, however, are not members of NATO.

This proposal which has been rejected – at least so far – by the presidential adviser and negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak who argued that the talks should first of all give priority to "security guarantees" for the country.

However, the situation is constantly evolving and still presents contradictory aspects: on the one hand, the Russian president has launched an appeal to the president of the European council, underlining that there is still no serious commitment to seek mutually acceptable solutions and on the other hand the president Ukrainian urged the nations sharing a common border with Russia to put in place an autonomous and independent defense capability.
