What happens to startups in Italy. Report

Numbers, comparisons and regional trends of innovative startups according to the quarterly report of Mise, Unioncamere and InfoCamere

Milan is confirmed as the main hub for startups. The Lombard capital is by far the province where the highest number of innovative startups is located.

Here is what emerges from the quarterly monitoring report dedicated to demographic trends and economic performance of innovative startups.

THE QUARTERLY REPORT

The report, which presents updated data as of 30 September 2020, is the result of the collaboration between Mise and InfoCamere, with the support of the Chamber of Commerce system.

GROWING STARTUP

The registered startups are now steadily settling over 10 thousand. As of 30 September 2020, there were 12,068, 3.3% of all newly established joint stock companies.

TERRITORIAL DISTRIBUTION

Lombardy hosts over a quarter of all Italian startups (27.3%). Lazio exceeds one thousand with 1.385, representing 11.5% (mostly located in Rome) and Veneto, with 1.008, 8.4% of the national total. However, the region with the highest density of innovative companies is Trentino-Alto Adige, where approximately 5.6% of all companies established in the last 5 years are startups.

Milan is by far the province in which the highest number of innovative startups is located: at the end of the second quarter of 2020 they were 2,370, 19.6% of the national total. In second place is Rome, the only other province over 1,000 (1,245 startups, 10.3% nationally) –

THE COMPANIES FOUNDED BY UNDER-35 ARE GROWING

The company's capital shareholders, compared to the previous quarter, increased by 5%, reaching over 56 thousand. The representation of companies founded by under-35s is high (18.6% of the total compared to 17.5% as at 30 March 2020), while female businesses are under-represented: 13.2%, compared to 21.6% recorded in joint-stock companies complex.

REVENUE

Innovative startups are mainly micro-enterprises, boasting an average production value of just over 201 thousand euros. This is also due to the constant turnover to which this population is subject: by definition, the “best-performer” companies, more consolidated in terms of age and turnover, gradually tend to lose the status of innovative startups.

INVESTMENTS AND PROFITABILITY

As physiological, innovative startups show a higher incidence than the average of loss-making companies (over 52.6% against 30.8% overall). However, companies in profit show particularly positive values in terms of profitability (ROI, ROE) and added value. Furthermore, innovative startups have a fixed asset rate – one of the main indicators of companies' propensity to invest – about seven times higher than other comparable companies.

7 OUT OF 10 STARTUPS PROVIDE SERVICES TO BUSINESSES

As regards the distribution by sector of activity (Table 2), 73.6% of innovative startups provide services to companies (in particular, the following specializations prevail: software production and IT consulting, 35.9%; R&D activities , 13.7%; information services business, 9.1%), 17.7% work in manufacturing (out of all: machinery manufacturing, 3.1%; manufacturing of computers and electronic and optical products, 2 , 8%;), while 3.2% work in commerce.
