What image to put on the new euro banknotes?

The ECB announces that it wants to listen to the opinion of European citizens to decide what to represent on the new euro banknotes that will be produced starting from 2024. Here is an idea

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced that it wants to give a new look to euro banknotes, establishing a collaboration with European citizens until the final decision in 2024.

THE SELECTION

"The redesign process will begin with the establishment of focus groups charged with gathering ideas from citizens across the euro area on possible topics for future euro banknotes," the note reads.

"A consultation group, made up of one expert from each euro area country, will pre-select and then present a series of new topics to the Governing Council of the ECB."

This is the procedure.

Once the proposals of the consultation group have been received, the ECB will invite the public to express themselves on the pre-selected topics. A design competition will therefore be held for the new banknotes, at the end of which the ECB will address the community again. The final decision will be taken by the Governing Council.

Once the design phase is complete, the Governing Council will authorize the production of the banknotes and decide on possible dates of issue.

WHO ARE THE EXPERTS

The members of the consultation group, already appointed by the ECB on the proposal of the national central banks of the euro area, are "specialists in various disciplines, from history to the natural and social sciences, from the visual arts to technology".

“Euro banknotes will always be part of our lives. They are a tangible and visible symbol of our cohesion in Europe, especially in times of crisis. Furthermore, their demand is still strong. After twenty years, it is time to renew the look of our banknotes so that European citizens of all ages and backgrounds can recognize themselves in them, ”said ECB President Christine Lagarde.

A PROPOSAL

The design of the euro banknotes currently in circulation is inspired by the theme “Epochs and styles of Europe”, represented by windows, portals and bridges.

“We want to design euro banknotes that European citizens can identify with and that they will use while feeling proud of their currency,” said Fabio Panetta, member of the Executive Committee.

An idea has actually already occurred to us: to dedicate the banknotes to the founding fathers of the European Community, the people who built European architecture with their vision: Konrad Adenauer, Walter Hallstein, Joseph Bech, Winston Churchill , Paul Henri Spaak, Jean Monnet, Robert Schuman, Altiero Spinelli, Alcide De Gasperi and many others.

These could be the faces to be printed on the next euro , people – better than windows, portals and bridges – who can inspire today's European rulers and citizens.
