What will change with Eni's discovery of gas in Cyprus

Eni has announced a major gas discovery in Cyprus. All the details

Eni announced today a natural gas discovery in Cyprus. More precisely, about 160 kilometers off its coast, in the Cronos-1 shaft located in Block 6.

DEPTH AND VOLUMES

The deposit is about 2,287 meters deep and – according to preliminary estimates – would contain approximately 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas.

PARTNERSHIP 50-50 WITH TOTAL

Block 6 is operated by Eni together with the French oil company TotalEnergies, both with a 50 per cent stake.

THE TECHNICAL DATA

The well – explains Eni in a press release – “encountered an important gas column in a sequence of carbonate reservoir rock with moderate to excellent properties. The intense data acquisition campaign highlighted an overall net pay of over 260 meters with intervals characterized by excellent permeability. Engineering studies are already underway for an accelerated development of the discovery ”.

"GAS TO EUROPE"

According to the company, the discovery of Cronos-1 "creates the conditions to lead to the development of further potential volumes of gas in the region and represents one of the actions achieved by Eni to support the supply of additional gas to Europe".

WHAT ENI DOES IN CYPRUS

Cronos-1 is the fourth exploration well drilled by Eni in Cyprus and the second in Block 6, after the discovery at Calypso-1 in 2018.

Eni has been present in Cyprus since 2013. The company operates blocks 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9, and holds stakes in blocks 7 and 11 operated by TotalEnergies.
