What's up with Stellantis' Jeep Wranglers?

The recall affects 2021-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUV models. Several cases have been recognized where cars have caught fire while charging. All the details

Maxi recall for Stellantis cars. The Italian-French-American multinational with 14 brands, including Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati, Opel and Peugeot, has in fact announced that it will have to check, as a precaution, the Jeep Wrangler SUVs 4xe.

THE RECALLED MODEL

Jeep Wrangler 4xe is available on the new car price list at the base price of 85,500 euros. The 2021 model, among those affected by the recall, is equipped with an automatic transmission. The 5-door SUV, among the technical specifications, has 380 HP / 279 kW of power and is equipped with a 17.3 kWh rechargeable battery.

THE RECALLED CARS

From what the group communicates, the recall concerns over 32 thousand Jeep Wranglers. The cause is a potential fire risk. The recall affects 2021-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUV models. All other Wrangler models are safe, again according to Stellantis.

Stellantis, based on information received from its customers, has in fact agreed that eight hybrid Wranglers caught fire while the vehicles were turned off and parked. Of these, six of the cars in question were found to be under charge when the confirmed fire cases occurred. As far as the group is aware, no one was injured.

THE PRECEDENT AT CHRYSLER

In 2023 there was another hybrid SUV from the Group that caused quite a few headaches for Stellantis engineers: the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid due to the possibility of fire risk. The latest recall was decided this summer, the third in three years, from 2020 to today.

The last time the cause of the recall was a faulty fuel hose – not installed correctly causing leaks – and it affected a thousand 2023 cars (to be precise, 967 vehicles) sold in the North American market alone.

The company had recognized a manufacturing error that could cause fuel leaks in the engine compartment, with the risk of fire given its heat when the car is moving or just parked.

The automaker had estimated that only about 1 percent of the recalled cars had a real problem.
