Who will be there (and who will not) at the IAA Mobility 2021 show in Munich

The motor shows get back into motion with the IAA Mobility 2021, scheduled from 7 to 13 September in Munich. The focus widens, with news on electrification and new forms of mobility. The article by Andrea Tartaglia

On Tuesday 7 September the IAA Mobility 2021 will open its doors (with a preview on 6 September dedicated to the press), the mobility exhibition to be held in Munich and which replaces the Frankfurt event. A new format and a new target: it will no longer be an event dedicated to the car but to the broader concept of mobility, the present one and above all the future one. A paradigm shift already perceptible in the IAA poster, in which there are no cars, but a series of futuristic vehicles, such as self-driving shuttle buses, and the more contemporary and ubiquitous electric scooters. “What will move us next” is the phrase that introduces the show and that raises the question that will be its leitmotif: what will we move with in the future?

Still with cars, there are few doubts about this, but they will be electrified, connected and part of a complex ecosystem in which vehicles will communicate with other vehicles and with infrastructures. In addition to showing the cars, the IAA will be an opportunity for a series of useful comparisons to address issues such as the ecological transition and the role of the automotive industry. And it is no coincidence that the event will be held in Germany, a country for which the auto industry remains central. Only some of the manufacturers will be present: there will be the German patrol Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Porsche), Renault (with Dacia), the Korean Hyundai E Kia, Smart, Ford, Cupra and Mini. Absent all the brands of the Stellantis galaxy, there will not even be Japanese brands and those not mentioned among the exhibitors.

AUDI

From Igolstadt, Audi's general quarter, to Munich the step is short and the German brand has chosen the IAA to present its approach to the electric, premium and technological car. It will bring the Grandsphere prototype that anticipates future applications of the technologies under study. It will be accompanied by the Skysphere concept, an electric roadster with 632 HP of power and over 500 km of autonomy built on the new platform dedicated to electric vehicles called Ppe.

BMW

The BMW headquarters is even closer, located right in Munich, to the IAA it brings the new i4, the innovative iX, as well as an important novelty such as the X5 powered with hydrogen fuel cell technology. The car will be used as a shuttle from the city center to the exhibition center, allowing visitors a first indirect approach with the solution that eliminates the battery of the EVs using chemistry and hydrogen as fuel to obtain electricity. In addition, there will be updates to Series 2 coupé, X3, X4 and Series 4 gran coupé.

CUPRA

There will also be Cupra, a Spanish sports brand owned by the Volkswagen Group, with the UrbanRebel concept, a zero-emission city car that anticipates the definitive model arriving in 2025 on the next Meb Entry platform of the Wolfsburg group. The presentation of the Born model is safe: compact electric crossover based on the Meb platform like the Volkswagen Id.3 and capable of delivering up to 231 Hp.

DACIA

The Romanian brand owned by Renault will present the Jogger model in Munich: a versatile, dynamic seven-seater family car with a price significantly lower than the competition. The choice to focus on the station wagon body rather than on the prevailing crossovers may seem to go against the trend, but it points to a rational choice capable of satisfying a clientele that requires great roominess and load volumes. In 2022 it will also be able to count on hybrid engines.

FORD

Ford brings to Monaco an anticipation of its “green” future, with battery and electrified models. The most significant novelty is the new Mustang Mach E Gt, which will place itself at the top of the Mach E offer, with a total power of 487 Hp and 860 Nm of maximum torque: it accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.7 seconds. The 98.7 kWh accumulators should ensure approximately 500 km of travel.

HYUNDAI

Electrification and hydrogen are the two central themes of Hyundai's strategy and will consequently be central to the IAA. Scheduled for 7 September is the Hydrogen Wave Global Forum, a conference during which the next applications of hydrogen technology will be presented. Naturally, the new generation of Ioniq 5 is the protagonist, in addition to the evolutions of the electrified Gmp platform also in the key to autonomous driving.

KIA

Another Korean brand, Kia will also take advantage of the Bavarian event to propose its progressive and inclusive approach to electrification. The protagonist is the fifth generation of the Sportage SUV, developed exclusively for the European market. It was born on the new N3 platform, which allows to accommodate all types of fuel: from diesel to mild hybrid, to full hybrid and plug-in hybrid. In Munich it will be possible to admire the new Ev6: the latest generation fully electric model.

MERCEDES

The Mercedes stand will be one of the most crowded with new products: five new products will be presented in Munich. Certainly the presence of the EQE, a first electric model signed Amg, a concept dedicated to the Maybach brand, the EQT van, the EQS luxury sedan and the European preview of the EQB SUV. Some rumors suggest that among the models on display there will also be a fully electric version of the legendary G-class. The C-Class All Terrain and the ultra-sporty 843 horsepower Amg GT 63 SE Performance plug-in hybrid will also debut.

MINI

The British brand will be present with its standard electrified models and with an Urbanaut prototype which is a study of versatility and autonomous driving applications for a city model.

PORSCHE

There is very little information on the presence of Porsche in Munich: only a detail in the photo of a future electric model. It is possible that it is an electric 718, and that it can exploit the same technology that will be developed by the German company for the hybrid model 2023.

RENAULT

The French manufacturer will be present only with news related to electrification. Megane E-Tech and the R5 concept will be the real stars; in addition, Mobilize Limo will be exhibited. A prototype of a luxury sedan designed for passenger transport. Here too, autonomous driving applications will only be possible in the long run.

SMART

Smart has not released any details but it seems certain that it will present the first SUV in Monaco. Obviously it will be electric and developed in collaboration between Mercedes and Geely.

VOLKSWAGEN

Lots of news for the first German brand in the automobile sector: the new T7, the Polo update, the Suv coupé Taigo and above all the great anticipation for the development of the Id range, with the debut of the sportier Id.5 Gtx that Gazzetta Motori has already tested in preview. The investment in research and development will lead to the announcement of great news on the side of the new Meb Entry platform, dedicated to compact cars with fully electric drive
