Why doesn't Meloni take part in Gualtieri's Jubilee shows?

Despite the triumphalism of the announcements for banal works, the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, is snubbed by the Meloni government at the inaugurations of the works for the Jubilee. Francis Walsingham's letter also on the latest boasts of the mayor of the capital…

Dear director,

Over the weekend I learned some extremely important news that you at Startmag have guiltily left out: I'm amazed at you, who on X boast that you only deal with important topics. But here I am to fill the gap, albeit a few days late.

Last week the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri made a big announcement on his social channels: the launch of a "new service" for washing and sanitizing rubbish bins to combat "dirt and bad smell". “Emptying the bins is important, but it's not enough,” Gualtieri explains: it's exactly the kind of messages and initiatives that I expect from the mayor of the capital of a G7 member country and the so-called first world. Well, well done!

But I confess to you, dear director, that I thought that the Roman bins were already sanitized: my fault, because even though I am old, I live projected into the future. At this rate, in 2025 the Capitoline administration will also begin to asphalt the bad roads. Or am I traveling too far with my imagination?

Forgive my enthusiasm, but I have a soft spot for leaders who continually raise the bar. And in fact, again from Gualtieri's profile I demand no less – nor should its inhabitants – from the largest city in the European Union and one of the most populous, served by three metro lines and renowned for its excellent roads.

The size of the hydromill is the mirror of the greatness of Rome and its mayor, who evidently never misses an opportunity to celebrate every small or big occasion. Here he is checking the cleanliness of the walls of the Giovanni XXIII Gallery and supervising the weeding of the streets of the Garbatella district.

So much glory, however, seems to hide the signs of decadence. I am referring to the failed bids to host Expo 2030 (to be held in Riyadh), the new European anti-money laundering authority (the AMLA, to be based in Frankfurt ) and the 2027 World Athletics Championships (to be held in Beijing ).

But not only. In addition to all this, in fact, there is a certain discontent in the palaces of Roman politics also due to the slowness of the public works that the capital will have to carry out in view of the Jubilee, starting next December. The proof is that the government representatives do not participate with Gualtieri in the inaugurations of the Jubilee projects, despite the event enjoying a special internal coordination cabin at Palazzo Chigi.

Yes – bins and jokes aside – which seems to me to be a relevant fact.

Best regards,

Francis Walsingham
