Why Stellantis and Foxconn give birth to Mobile Drive

Stellantis and Foxconn have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to create Mobile Drive. Here's what they will do

Stellantis whizzes with Foxconn: that is, with its subsidiary FIH Mobile.

The two companies have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to create Mobile Drive, a 50/50 joint venture, based in the Netherlands.

All the details.

WHAT MOBILE DRIVE DOES

The newco will be an automotive supplier, working out competitive bids to provide software and related hardware solutions to Stellantis and other interested automakers, the two groups say. In particular, Mobile Drive will offer infotainment, telematics and cloud service platform development programs through software innovations that should include applications based on artificial intelligence, 5G communication, and more.

Among the solutions that Mobile Drive will offer is smart cockpit technology that will try to integrate the car into the lifestyle of every driver.

STELLANTIS AND FOXCONN CO-OWNERS OF THE TECHNOLOGIES

Stellantis and Foxconn will jointly own each product developed. The fourth car manufacturer in the world will make available its engineering and vehicle design skills at 360 degrees, while Foxconn will provide all those for the development of software and hardware for smartphones and electronics for the final consumer.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SOFTWARE

"Software is a strategic element for our sector and Stellantis wants to be a leader with Mobile Drive, a company that will make possible the rapid development of connectivity functions and services that represent the next big evolution in our sector, as it has been with electrification technology, ”said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis. “Today, there is something that matters as much as an attractive design or innovative technology, it is how the features inside our vehicles improve the lives of our customers,” added Tavares.

CUSTOMERS WANT INCREASINGLY CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

This is echoed by the words of Young Liu, president of Foxconn: “The vehicles of the future will be increasingly driven and characterized by software. Today's and tomorrow's customers are demanding and expecting ever more creative and software-based solutions – solutions that connect drivers and passengers to the vehicle, inside and out. Mobile Drive intends to meet and exceed these expectations thanks to the involvement of teams of designers and software and hardware engineers ”.

THE PREVIOUS COLLABORATION

Foxconn and Stellantis have already collaborated, in recent months, on the Airflow Vision concept project, the SUV of the future with a futuristic design with minimal and spacious interiors.
