Will Maserati get electrified and never close at a loss?

All Maserati projects with FCA's wishes for a return to profitability

16 models by 2024, all also in an electrified version. Maserati tries to start again by presenting 13 completely new models and 3 updates over the next few years. A project that, for FCA, is worth 2.5 billion euros.

From 2021, production of the Grecale, the hybrid version of the Levante, will start in Cassino. 2022, on the other hand, will be a very busy year, with seven models on the way.

All the details.

FCA BETS 2.5 BILLION

Let's start with the costs of the recovery plan. The investment for Maserati so far is over 2.5 billion euros, a very significant figure. There will be others. This will allow Maserati to have all the necessary resources to launch the models we have designed. My expectation, but not only mine, is that Maserati will be the last year at a loss, ”said FCA CEO Mike Manley during a press conference for the relaunch of the luxury car manufacturer.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS

"Maserati is one of the crown jewels, it is a luxury brand and being lucky enough to have a luxury brand – which in its essence is about luxury – is a huge advantage for the group if it is financed and managed in the right way", he added. “In the past there have been some errors within the group, now these problems have been eradicated and we have given the right resources. We expect the brand to be successful ".

THE MASERATI PLAN: FROM 2020 TO 2024

The Maserati plan, presented in Modena on the occasion of the 'MMXX: Time to be audacious' event, envisages 16 model launches by 2024, 13 of which are completely new. The new cars will cover 90% of the Trident house market.

ALL MODELS WILL HAVE THE PLUG

The models will all also have the electric version. The range with the plug will be identified with the name Folgore. The models will be equipped with a new type of inverter, with silicon carbide technology, currently used only in Formula 1 and Formula E.

2021: THE DEBUT OF GRECALE

Meanwhile, in 2020, the car manufacturer's first hybrid, the Ghibli, arrived on the market.

2021 will be the year of the arrival on the market of the Grecale, a car that takes its name from the “Mediterranean wind that blows impetuously from the north-east, and will play a leading role in the development of the brand”. It will be produced in Cassino.

SEVEN MODELS IN 2022

2022 will be the turning point, with seven new models expected to hit the market. Maserati is expected to bring to the market, among other models, the MC20 coupé, spider and electric and the new GranTurismo, which will be the first 100% battery-powered Maserati to be launched on the market.

The new GranCabrio is also expected in 2022; the new Ghibli, the Quattroporte and the Levante.

THE 2023 PROGRAM

The following year, however, the new generations of the Quattroporte and the Levante will arrive on the market, including electric ones.

MASERATI AFTER 2025

Not just new products. In 2025, the company hopes that SUVs will represent 70% of the cars sold by Maserati, 40% more than in 2019. Sedans will have to represent 15% of the market, while sports cars 5%.

POSSIBLE SPIN OFF?

And looking to the future, FCA does not rule out the possibility of a spin off. “Maserati has an incredible future. I would like true value to be reflected through our shareholders. Maserati should do so as part of our Group as margins increase. Discussion for the future perhaps with a glass of grappa on the table, ”said Manley, answering a question about a possible Maserati spin-off.
