Orsini’s fault? That of not adapting to the dominant mainstream

The writer was really surprised by the "preventive censorship" practiced by Rai against Alessandro Orsini, sociologist of the Roman university Luiss. The executives first made him sign a contract to appear in the RaiTre Cartabianca program, hosted by Bianca Berlinguer. Then, in a flash, the contract was torn apart due to the alleged pro-Putin positions that Orsini himself would have manifested.

I would therefore like to express some general considerations. In the first place, having listened to Orsini on several occasions, it did not seem to me that the teacher was defending the Moscow Tsar or that he would take sides with him. Rather, he emphasizes prudence by recalling that, even in a hateful war like the one being fought in Ukraine, reason is never all on one side and wrong on the other. It also invites the political world and the Italian mass media to reflect on the consequences that sanctions can have for our country, notoriously poor in energy resources and now also poor in food resources, after agriculture has been reduced to the rank of Cinderella for decades. (which it did not have before).

What, then, is Orsini's fault? That of not adapting to the dominant information mainstream , to that sort of "single thought" that came into effect after the invasion of Ukraine. If someone, like Orsini, allows himself to deviate – even slightly – from the aforementioned mainstream , he immediately becomes a pariah , an untouchable to be kept at a distance to avoid infecting us all.

Now, Rai is a public body financed, even if only partially, by the compulsory subscription fee. One wonders if it is possible that a body of that type that is based, I repeat, even on the money that citizens take out of their pockets, can afford to censor someone by preventing (paying!) Viewers from listening to their opinions.

Are these opinions different from those in vogue? All right, that's a good sign. It means that freedom of opinion, speech and thought still exists in Italy, unlike what happens in autocratic and totalitarian states. It means that we still live in a liberal democracy.

I hear, but I have no evidence to confirm the hypothesis, that the censorship is the work of the Democratic Party. If so, I would like to point out an oddity. The Democratic Party is (in part) the heir to the old PCI. Just think of the names of Bersani, Napolitano, D'Alema etc. Well, Enrico Berlinguer, shortly before the collapse of the USSR, proudly shouted from the stage in front of a packed square that "in Russia there is no crisis!" . The PCI secretary had not read Ludwig von Mises's masterpiece “Socialism” , in which the Austrian School scholar demonstrated that a system like the Soviet one was destined to fail for purely economic reasons.

Giorgio Napolitano, for his part, vigorously defended the Soviet invasion of Hungary. But, please, where does Vladimir Putin come from? Isn't he a former officer of the KGB, the very powerful Soviet secret service? And was he not educated in the Party schools of the former USSR, where he received a mental training that bears precisely the Soviet mark? And how can the comrades of the former PCI ignore these coincidences?

Funny mystery, as Dario Fo would say. In any case, it is obvious that in a period like this it is difficult to maintain a minimum of balance. How do you do it, when even a person known for his aplomb like Mario Draghi puts his helmet on his head, only to be denied later after realizing that the no-fly zone over Ukrainian skies could really cause the explosion of a world conflict?

As far as I'm concerned, however, I go back to reiterating that censorship, of any kind, should not find a home in an institution like Rai . It may be that Orsini goes to Mediaset , but the fact remains that those who pay a public fee have the right not to be censored.
