Apple sues NSO for Pegasus spyware

Apple followed the example of WhatsApp and Meta (formerly known as Facebook) in suing spyware maker Pegasus NSO Group. In addition to promising new information on how the NSO Group managed to infect its iPhones, the Infinity Loop company says it is "seeking a permanent injunction to ban the NSO Group from using any Apple software, service or device."

Pegasus spyware is designed to allow governments to remotely access a phone's microphones, cameras and other data on iPhone and Android, according to Apple's press release. It is also designed to be able to infect phones without requiring any user action and without a trace, according to reports released earlier this year by a journalistic coalition called the Pegasus Project.

Apple says that, thanks to the security enhancements in iOS 15, "it has not observed any evidence of successful remote attacks against devices running iOS 15 and later." When the Pegasus Project released its reports in July, Amnesty International said the latest versions of iOS (at the time iOS 14.6) were susceptible to attack.
