Germany will supply fifth-generation armored drones to Ukraine

Robotics and autonomous systems developer Milrem Robotics and German defense firm Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) have signed a contract for the delivery of 14 THeMIS fifth-generation unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to Ukraine, according to a statement. print by Milrem published on Tuesday. The effort is funded by the German Defense Ministry.

According to the company's website, “THeMIS Cargo's purpose is to reduce the cognitive load of soldiers and to provide a means to transport and utilize additional equipment and firepower. The THeMIS Cargo increases the mobility of dismounted units and makes them more effective against the opponent. THeMIS Cargo can also be used to support logistics activities in base and for last mile replenishment”.

The tank can reach 20 km per hour, has a maximum payload of 1200 kg and runs on a diesel and electric generator. It features three cameras: IR (MIL-STD-810G), thermal and HDR.

Meanwhile, during combat, “THeMIS combat UGVs provide direct fire support to maneuver forces and act as force multipliers. With an integrated remote-controlled self-stabilizing weapon system, they provide high accuracy over large areas, day and night, increasing stand-off distance, force protection and survivability. Combat UGVs can be equipped with light or heavy machine guns, 40mm grenade launchers, 30mm autocannons and anti-tank missile systems. Here is a video with THeMIS in action

Evacuation of victims and clearing of routes
About half of the new Ukrainian tanks will be configured for casualty evacuation and delivery is expected by the end of this year. The remaining seven, to be delivered in the second quarter of 2023, will be configured to secure transit routes and also carry cargo from French defense manufacturer CNIM Systèmes Industriels.

“The evacuation of the victims and the clearing of the paths are two labor-intensive activities that require the commitment of several people, constantly under the threat of enemy fire. Automating these tasks with unmanned vehicles alleviates this danger and allows more soldiers to remain in a secure area or be assigned to more important tasks,” explained Captain Jüri Pajuste, director of research and development in the defense sector of Milrem Robotics. A model of these old-fashioned UGVs has already been supplied to a Ukrainian charity, and the vehicles are already in service in 16 countries. This is very advanced and delicate technology and it seems strange that it is sent directly to a hostile battlefield.
