Nobody gives us Democracy. We don’t have to get by, but live

by Davide Gionco

Our poor Italy, how many things are wrong …
Politicians who steal (it's raining, government thief!), The mafia, environmental degradation, unemployment, poverty, too many taxes …
Yet things continue not to change, despite the many complaints, despite all Italians being convinced that it is easy to do better than those who govern us. Even those of the 5 Star Movement thought so: let's send normal, decent people to Parliament and everything will change for the better.

Reality shows us that this was not the case.

The fact is that Democracy does not give it to anyone. The vast majority of Italians complain, but then do not lift a finger to try to change things.
Some don't even go to vote. It is certainly true that the choice is not that great, but the expression of a clear vote by the citizens can send clear signals to the political class. If you don't even vote, they won't get those signals either.
And then, when it comes to voting, many Italians don't even bother to find out about possible alternatives. If today, outside the "famous" parties, statesmen of the caliber of Alcide De Gasperi and Aldo Moro were to stand as candidates, most likely they would not even be elected. They are the ones who have the skills to really save our poor country.
On the contrary: probably such characters would not even find a place in the candidate lists. Yes, because not even those who have the power to decide the applications have an interest in knowing whether those people have skills or not. They are much more interested in having yes-men or people who can docilely obey the party leader.

Many Italians of those who complain do not even deal with politics. They frequent social media by putting the LIKE on photos of kittens or on the music video of the moment. Better not to talk about politics, because otherwise you end up fighting …

And then: why have a hard time trying to change things? It's useless, nothing will ever change …

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati wrote “ we must not get by, but live” .
Democracy does not give it to us, it is not something for lazy or fearful people, who are afraid of getting tired or taking risks to obtain fundamental rights.
The little democracy that Italy had obtained in the post-war decades had been conquered at a severe price, with the struggles of the partisans, with the exile or confinement of those who would later become political leaders.

If Italy is doing so badly today, it is not above all "the fault" of an inept and corrupt political class, but above all "the fault" of too many citizens who have preferred to stay comfortable taking care of their own affairs, because they are committed to countering the abuses of various strong powers (parties, Freemasonry, mafia, multinationals, etc.) was too tiring, because it is risky to go against those in power, while it is easier to adapt to power, trying to derive small personal advantages. Or, even, to become part of it. And who cares what will happen to others, who weren't smart enough to agree with those in power.

If most of us are not interested in politics, politics certainly does care about us.

If in recent months we have registered tens of thousands of deaths due to a lack of health facilities, it is because years ago, when someone decided to cut healthcare spending by tens of billions, when someone decided to put the limited number of medical schools (train a doctor costs …), when someone signed agreements with multinational drug companies, too few citizens protested.

If every year the number of the poor increases
1) previously caused by the closure of factories that relocated abroad
2) then caused by the “Amazon” system and the large distribution system, which is unfair competition with small retailers
3) therefore caused by an unsustainable increase in taxation, to respect the "parameters" of the austerity policies imposed by the European Union
4) and finally caused by the forced closure of entire production sectors, without adequate government economic compensation, due to the covid-19 health crisis

if all this happened it is because "politics" took an interest in us, imposing rules that guaranteed the interests of a few, to the detriment of many, those who did not have time to deal with politics.

The Blackrock company, which collects investment funds globally, has a portfolio of almost 8,000 billion dollars, equal to 5 times the wealth produced in Italy in a year.

BlackRock's $ 7 trillion in AUM built on passive and ETFs

These funds are invested to secure returns for investors. And, of course, maximum rents are guaranteed when governments are persuaded to impoverish the population by transferring the wealth collected to "investors".

You who read this article, do not remain idle, do not be satisfied with putting a useless "like" on social networks.
We must live, fighting like lions to free ourselves. We cannot just get by hoping that, for who knows what luck, things will get better without us making an effort to change them.
