Putting together Liberals and Sovereignists, here is the real “revolution” (by P. Becchi and G. Palma)

by Paolo Becchi and Giuseppe Palma in Libero of 10 October 2020.

Salvini speaks of a " liberal revolution ". Many were stunned by the revival of the Berlusconi slogan of the 1990s. But "liberal" can mean many things. " Liberal " does not only mean "less state and more market" – if anything, this is "liberalism" – " liberal " means first of all full freedom of thought and speech without the diktats of "politically correct", freedom of the press without ideological censorship, freedom business without the crazy rules that destroy the small craftsman or the freelancer, freedom in justice – where the rights of the accused are sacred – freedom of education , personal freedom deemed inviolable, and so on.
In the last seven months there has been a real liberal "surrender" in our country : fundamental freedoms, such as those of movement and circulation, limited by decree of the Prime Minister , invasive obligations for physical integrity established by ministerial ordinance, respect for the dying and the deceased canceled in a few seconds, freedom of speech guaranteed only to those who speak with the mouth of the government, media persecution instead against those who express any criticism of government decisions, spread of health terrorism on the virus through irrational dogmas , such as that the obligation of the mask outdoors, while respecting the distance, continuous alarmism without thinking about the data, and so on.

In this situation, a " second wave " of liberalism is welcome. Today, however, we must deal with a different reality: there is a much more invasive EU, which does not collaborate with the states as it did before the 1990s, but forces them to do what France and Germany require them to do, following neoliberal policies in economics. which resulted in the weakening of the economy of our country. It goes without saying that all this happened with the introduction of the euro. Apart from the decision to suspend the stability pact during the pandemic, a just and saving decision, even today the Union is in fact more stepmother than mother. Suffice it to see the step back on the billions of the Recovery Fund promised to Italy just three months ago.
It is therefore necessary in our opinion, as we have written several times for over a year now, to combine liberalism, in the meaning explained above, with sovereignty, a doctrine that responds to the need of the European peoples to return to having a central role in Europe. through their respective nation states. Nation states and the EU can work together without the former being absorbed into the latter, depriving them of their identity in order to subject everyone to the ideology of the market. Market liberalism is not enough to create strong political bonds of belonging. This is its most obvious limit.
This is the function of sovereignty : to limit the free-market distortions of the EU, proposing solutions such as – let's take a few examples – the definitive abrogation of the stability pact and the fiscal compact, the melius revision of the EU treaties and the functioning of the single currency. Being in the Union does not necessarily mean being with those who make up the majority in the Union today, and you can continue to play the role of opposition in the European Parliament in a completely legitimate way, without passing through nationalist extremists.

The same could be said with reference to the Italian parliament. It is important for the League to bring out this “ sovereign-liberal ” image in Europe, in order to avoid isolation.
Social democracy and liberal democracy are both idelogies for some time in crisis, " liberal sovereignty " could be the new government alternative, not only in Europe but also in Italy. Ideologically the problem of "liberalism" is that of having forgotten the peoples, the problem of "socialism" is instead that of having forgotten individuals. The hypothesis of a “weak sovereignty”, “liberal” , goes beyond – in the Hegelian sense – the limits of the two previous conceptions. In our opinion, Salvini should bet on this card.
