St. Petersburg: Mysterious gas pipeline explosion lights up the sky

Great flames and thick plumes of acrid smoke were seen rising into the air over St. Petersburg today. Local sources tweeted about the deafening explosion, asking if the flames were caused by a normal fire or another type of explosion.

Footage of the fire showed the flames erupting into a mushroom cloud in the air over what appears to be a forest area in Vsevolozhsk, a residential area about 24km (15 miles) east of St. Petersburg.

State media said the explosion was caused by the bursting of a gas pipeline running through the Leningrad region. The local governor said there is no threat to the local population and the fire is under control.

Gas explosions are not infrequent in Russia, just a few hours before there had been a similar event on the island of Sakhalin with some deaths, but it is a question, as sometimes happens in Italy, of explosions in apartments due to breakage or defects in the pipelines. In this case the impressive explosion appears to have occurred in the pipeline structure and is much more unusual.
