The €11,000 car with a range of 400 km has been launched. Of course it’s not European

Finally the electric car within the reach of almost everyone's pockets arrives on the market, a pity that, as expected, it is not European, but Chinese. With a cost of 11,400 USD, approximately 10,500 Euros, the BYD Seagul which has already accumulated 10,000 orders at its presentation.

Based on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 – like the Dolphine Seal models – Seagull, “Gabbiano”, is powered by a 55 kilowatt (74 horsepower) front electric motor. Customers can choose between two BYD Blade LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery packs, one rated at 30 kilowatt-hours with a 305-kilometer CLTC range, and one at 38 kWh with a 405-kilometer CLTC range.

Both batteries offer DC fast charging capability, which allows the BYD Seagull to charge up to 80% in 30 minutes.

In terms of dimensions, the BYD Seagull bridges the gap between the city car and small car segments, measuring 3.78 meters in length and 1.71 meters in width, with a wheelbase of 2.5 metres, thus being a slightly shorter than the Dolphin model from which it is derived.

The five-door, four-seat hatchback features a modern design, somewhat similar to that of the Dolphin, albeit a bit bolder. The Seagull features sharp available LED headlights, a large windshield with a single wiper, the "floating roof" design, an LED rear light bar, and a sporty roof spoiler.

Inside, the Seagull features a 5-inch instrument cluster and 12.8-inch infotainment screen, a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, wireless charging pad, and dual cupholders. Nothing luxurious, a utility car interior, but not pauperistic either

The BYD Seagull has all it takes to become the best-selling electric vehicle in its market segment, if not overall. In fact, analysts told Reuters it could become the best-selling EV in the country within six months of launch. This could make the BYD Seagull the best-selling EV in the world given the size of the Chinese EV market.

When the Commission pushed for the spread of electric mobility, some European car manufacturers ventured by promising the 10,000 euro electric car. We've gotten there now, too bad the car is Chinese. Among other things, with a not brilliant Chinese domestic market, it will be easy for BYD to pour cars onto the European market. Who will buy the expensive electric VWs and BMWs?
