Fast Fashion and the flip side of remote charity.
FIND OUT WHAT ARE THE REAL ACTS OF RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT AND PEOPLE.

Where do the clothes we throw in the well-known yellow bins end up?
Do you think they go directly to the poor in your city or area?
Well no! In truth, they enter a tortuous market tour that takes them around the world; but not all.

  1. 3% ends up in landfills.
  2. 29% is recycled.
  3. 68% is resold in the second-hand circuit.

In the European second-hand market? But not even for a dream: it all ends up in the poorest countries such as: Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Benin, but especially in Ghana! (laws).

About 15 million tons of used clothes arrive in Ghana every week; 40% of them are burned in the slums.

Once this cargo reaches Africa, it generates income for the sellers, but it collides with local textile productions which therefore suffer damage (so-called textile and clothing dumping).
In practice, these cheaply sold clothes create internal competition on the continental market that puts local and national producers out of the game.

But apart from the damage to the economy, the remaining part (about 40%) that is not sold ends up in Ghanaian landfills where they are burned or the toxic fibers are left to disperse in the environment, creating the phenomenon of nano plastics, which cause of gastric disease, including cancer, and which have entered the food chain.

According to some reports , between 200,000 and 500,000 tons of clothing arrive in Africa each year.

It is estimated that 73% of the materials used in the fashion industry end up in landfill or are burned at the end of their useful life and the amount of unreused textile waste and textile product waste is estimated to be around $500 billion each year .

A study conducted by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation estimates that the fashion industry contributes 2-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions which in total reach 1.2 billion tons of CO2 per year and the waste of 93 billion cubic meters of water every year.

What solutions can we adopt?

There is no need to manifest or smear artistic assets; you have to act firsthand.
So what can we do?

– DONATE DIRECTLY TO THE NEEDY OR TO COOPERATIVE SALES POINTS IN YOUR CITY

– BUY QUALITY CLOTHING THAT LASTS OVER TIME AND CREATES JOBS IN ITALY

Here's what you need to know immediately in more detail:

  • buy quality clothing that lasts longer
  • wear them longer
  • donate them directly to those in need
  • donate them to associations, cooperatives and second-hand stores that resell them directly through their own shops or recycle them
  • focus on quality instead of quantity (and frequency of purchases)
  • enhance craftsmanship, preferably local
  • find out about this issue and act in an informed manner

Consumer actions can have a significant impact in promoting more sustainable and responsible fashion
