5G, all of Tim’s steps in the O-Ran alliance

5G, all of Tim's steps in the O-Ran alliance

Tim starts the new 'European Otic Lab' laboratory in Turin for the development of O-Ran solutions. All the details

Tim starts the new 'European Otic Lab' laboratory in Turin for the development of O-Ran solutions.

The Open Test and Integration Center – Otic Lab, in line with the standards set by O-Ran Alliance, will be based at Tim's Innovation laboratories in Turin.

The Italian group led by Luigi Gubitosi is among the first operators in the world and the only one in Italy to start this laboratory, underlines a note from the group chaired by Salvatore Rossi.

The center will operate in synergy with the entire Open Ran ecosystem (builders, start-ups, system integrators, etc.) in order to experiment with new solutions and accelerate this technology for the development of the new pan-European architecture of the mobile network (5G, Cloud and Edge Computing).

In fact, Tim has been a Member of the O-Ran Alliance since 2018 and last February signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the main European operators to promote Open Ran solutions.

And with regard to the deployment of 5G networks, in Italy the Services also expressed their appreciation for the O-Ran initiative.

In fact, in the Annual Report to the Parliament of the Dis, it is stated that “the sector is following with particular interest the development of architectures based on open technologies, such as the Open Ran initiative, to promote greater transparency and diversification of suppliers”.

All the details.

WHAT TIM'S OPIC LABORATORY WILL DO IN TURIN

Tim's Open Testing and Integration Center will offer a collaborative and open work environment, qualified to support the wide adoption of technical specifications and promote the O-Ran ecosystem.

TEST SUPPLIER'S EQUIPMENT

In fact, the Otic Lab will work to develop implementations and solutions, as well as test and verify the conformity of the RAN equipment (antennas, radio base stations, etc.) of individual or different suppliers in order to provide technical results to the community on the experiences acquired during the test.

TIM'S COMMITMENT TO OPEN RAN SOLUTIONS

With this initiative, Tim confirms its commitment to encourage the adoption and development of Open Ran – Radio Access Network solutions in Europe and accelerate their implementation on its commercial network.

Recently the Group, one of the first operators in Europe and the only one in Italy, has adopted an Open Ran solution on a live network in Faenza.

TIM MEMBER OF O-RAN ALLIANCE

As we said, since 2018 Tim has been part of the O-Ran Alliance, an international community of mobile network operators, suppliers and academic institutions. Founded by AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Ntt and Orange, O-Ran Alliance aims to create and evolve existing mobile networks into smarter, open and fully interoperable networks.

It is a standards-setting body that includes participants from over 200 technology companies, including Microsoft, Facebook, chip makers, software companies, and leading European vendors Ericsson and Nokia.

The O-Ran Alliance includes Chinese operators but not its tech giant Huawei.

Today O-Ran Alliance pursues the goal of evolving radio access according to the paradigms of the disaggregation of radio functions, virtualization and hardware / software decoupling with the use of generic hardware (so-called whitebox), automation and standardization of open interfaces to enable a true interoperability.

The development of Open Ran solutions will increase the available options allowing operators to further strengthen security standards, improve network performance and optimize costs.
