Acea, Fs, Fca, Leonardo and more, here are the companies financed by the Bei

The EIB (European Investment Bank) allocated 11.9 billion euros to Italy in 2020: among the companies financed there are also Acea, Edison, Fs, Fca, Leonardo. All the details

6.6 billion euros in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, of which 2 billion for healthcare, 11.9 billion in loans and guarantees, 0.73% of GDP.

These are the main numbers that characterize the relationship between Italy andthe European Investment Bank illustrated by the vice president of the EIB, Dario Scannapieco, who also holds the position of president of the EIF, the European Investment Fund.

Let's go step by step.

ITALY FIRST BENEFICIARY COUNTRY OF THE EIB

We start from a record. Also in 2020, Italy is the first beneficiary of the European Investment Bank's finance. Our country was the recipient of 11.9 billion (+ 8.2%) for 32.4 billion in investments, of which 10.9 billion in loans. During the past year 65 transactions were carried out.

The measures, loans and guarantees, represent 0.73% of the Italian GDP (the 32.4 billion investments activated represent 2% of the GDP).

THE ANSWER TO THE PANDEMIC

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the EIB has mobilized up to € 6.6 billion, 30% of the entire EU, towards Italy. Among these, 2 billion are destined for healthcare (1 billion already paid out), for 8,000 places in intensive and sub-intensive care, 651 emergency rooms and 9,600 hires.

And again: the EIB has ordered a moratorium for municipalities and provinces, with 640 million earmarked for regional policies, including 150 million from the Enterprise Emergency Fund.

BUSINESSES FINANCED BY THE EIB

The support of the EIB is growing, in full pandemic, to the SMEs of our country. As part of the response to Covid-19, over 4.4 billion loans were disbursed in partnership with banks and CDPs.

During 2020, 53,809 Italian SMEs were financed for a total of 504,718 jobs supported.

Looking at the last decade, the EIB has granted 45 billion loans to small and medium-sized enterprises in our country, for 345 thousand SMEs financed and 6.3 million jobs supported.

SUPPORT FOR LARGE WORKS AND LARGE COMPANIES

There is no lack of support for large companies and major works. The EIB received 2 billion for the Naples-Bari high-speed train, 450 million for the FS group for 135 new hybrid trains, 300 million for Edison for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, 500 million for Viveracqua, Acea, Lario Reti and Smat for the water sector.

FINANCING FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT BY THE EIB

The EIB also financed FCA with 785 million euros for the development of hybrid and electric vehicles; 200 million to Leonardo in support of the aerospace, cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing sector; 250 million to Stm for the development of new generation semiconductors.

AID FROM THE EUROPEAN INVESTMENT FUND

To do its part also the EIF, the European investment fund, which allocated almost 1.4 billion in new finance to Italy in 2020. In particular, over 1.1 billion of guarantees and 216 million equity. In Venture Capital, investments were made in the Oltre III and Primo Space Funds, with the aim of building a national ecosystem for venture capital. Six funds were supported in private equity, bringing to almost 800 million invested in the last 5 years.

THE OPPORTUNITY OF RECOVERY FUND

According to Dario Scannapieco, Italy should restart from these loans and the Recovery Fund. The Recovery Fund "is perhaps the last great opportunity to change the country", said the vice president of the EIB. The Recovery Fund "is not just a financial opportunity but must trigger a profound process of structural reforms to make the country overcome that constraint on growth that in the last 40 years has rarely allowed it to record a GDP growth of more than 2%, a discontinuity is needed in the way in which the State operates, it is not possible that it takes 25 years to make an investment financeable ”, added Scannapieco, referring to the high-capacity Naples-Bari railway. The project, Scannapieco pointed out, was born in early 2000 "and made financeable only in 2021".
