All the numbers of food e-shopping. Report

Numbers and projections of the eCommerce B2c Netcomm Observatory – School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano presented at the conference "Food & Grocery: the pandemic slows down, eCommerce is growing!".

How's the Italian food e-shopping? What are the effects of the pandemic on an increasingly important sector for our economy? Data in hand, Food delivery seems to have left behind the difficulties caused by the closure of restaurants and is growing at a rapid pace (+ 56%), exceeding 1.4 billion euros; Food grocery (i.e. supermarket products), after the boom of 2020, grows by + 39% in 2021 and touches 1.4 billion euros.

Fewer obstacles caused by lockdowns, adverse color zones and pandemic restrictions on consumer purchases translate into mostly positive percentages, also facilitated by an increase in online initiatives throughout the Italian territory and an enhancement of the logistics infrastructure, the ability to delivery and how to collect the shopping. Finally, Food and Wine records an increase of + 17% and reaches 750 million. While in 2021 online purchases in Food & Grocery will exceed the value of 4 billion euros in Italy (+ 38% compared to 2020).

These are the numbers, projections and estimates of the eCommerce B2c Netcomm Observatory – School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano presented at the conference "Food & Grocery: the pandemic slows down, eCommerce is growing!".

The numbers are certainly positive, but it is also noted how the 2020 growth is, by percentage, similar to that of 2019 and confirms what appears to be a historical trend of contraction. It is not even surprising, however, given that we are talking about a previously absent market, which has enjoyed an obvious explosion, while nowadays it is mature enough to stabilize around data and percentages that will allow us to understand the real economic significance of the phenomenon.

More positive numbers, on the other hand, can be read for what concerns the Food & Grocery market since it was able to benefit from significant growth during the pandemic thanks, without too much imagination, to the increase in online orders for food products.

"Without Covid-19, growth would have been decidedly slower," explained Riccardo Mangiaracina , scientific director of the B2c eCommerce Observatory. «The emergency has therefore helped to lay the foundations for the digital development of the sector, spurring the offer towards a greater awareness of digital within companies and consequently increasing important investments dedicated to B2C e-commerce. Regarding the demand, it has helped consumers in their digital education process ».

GROWING FOOD E-SHOPPING BUT WITH DIFFERENT DYNAMICS

And in fact, in 2020, the Food & Grocery sector recorded exponential growth, more than double the average of the online product market. The outbreak of the health emergency caused a boom in online demand which, in turn, generated an acceleration in the eCommerce strategy of all the main operators, but with different dynamics in the various segments (Grocery, Food and Wine and Food Delivery).
