Cloud EU, approval from Brussels to Tim, Engineering and Fincantieri

The European Commission has approved up to 1.2 billion euros in state aid for a European cloud computing project (IPCEI CIS). The Italian companies involved are Tim, Reply, Fincantieri, Tiscali and Engineering.

Green light from Brussels for 1.2 billion in state aid to develop cloud technologies.

The European Commission has approved , under EU State aid rules, an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) to support the research, development and first industrial deployment of advanced cloud and edge computing technologies between different suppliers in Europe.

The Italian companies involved in the project are Reply, Tim, Tiscali Italia, Fincantieri and Engineering Engineering Informatica. In addition to Italy, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain have notified the project.

As Reuters notes, the EU executive's move is an "attempt to stimulate the involvement of European businesses in a sector dominated by US big tech. The three major players in cloud computing are Amazon, Microsoft and Google."

All the details.

THE IPCEI CIS PROJECT

The project, called IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI CIS), was jointly notified by seven Member States: France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. The European Union IPCEIs are designed to bring together research, finance and business to stimulate the EU's economic growth and competitiveness and drive its green and digital transition. Since 2018, the European Commission has approved six IPCEIs in the sectors of batteries, hydrogen, microelectronics and communication technologies.

As the note from the Brussels executive explains, the IPCEI CIS is the first IPCEI in the cloud and edge computing sector. It is about the development of Europe's first interoperable and freely accessible data processing ecosystem, the multi-provider cloud-to-edge continuum. It will develop data processing capabilities, software and data sharing tools that enable federated, energy-efficient and reliable distributed data processing technologies across cloud and edge and related services.

STATE AID APPROVED BY THE EU FOR THE CLOUD PROJECT

Member States will provide up to €1.2 billion in public funding which is expected to unlock another €1.4 billion in private investment. 19 companies are participating in the European project on cloud technology, including Atos and Orange, Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia and Telefonica Espana as well as small and medium-sized businesses.

THE ITALIAN COMPANIES PRESENT IN THE PROJECT

Five Italian companies are present in the project: Reply and Tim participate in the Cloud-Edge Capabilities part, Tiscali Italia is involved in the Advanced smart data processing tools and services part, Fincantieri and Engineering Engineering Informatica are involved in the Advanced Applications part.

THE RESULTS

“The IPCEI will involve highly ambitious research, necessary to enable the adoption of innovative data processing applications and services for European businesses, public administrations and citizens – commented Commissioner Didier Reynders, responsible for competition policy – The Today's decision ensures that public support is well targeted and sufficient to allow the project to pursue its ambitious objectives, while safeguarding a level playing field and ensuring that strong positive impacts can be generated across the Union."

Reynders added that the IPCEI project would initially create around 1,000 direct and indirect jobs for data scientists or artificial intelligence specialists, with another 5,000 jobs later.

If the project is successful enough to generate additional revenue, the companies will have to pay back some of the aid, Reuters reports.
