Cybersecurity, here's how Google will finance universities in Europe

Google will offer funding of up to 1 million euros, materials and training to 8 universities in 8 different European countries that will participate in the European Cybersecurity Seminars. All the details

Google announced in recent days the opening of a new cybersecurity center in Málaga, in southern Spain. This Google Security Engineering Center aims to be, according to the company, "a place where we can collaborate with European experts, academics, companies and governments on best practices" for monitoring and combating cyber threats, "share research and knowledge and raise the level of safety for all."

In 2022, according to research by Check Point, incidents of cyberattacks around the world grew by 38 percent on an annual basis; Google analyzes say that 43 percent of European small and medium-sized businesses have suffered a cyber attack in the last two years.

WHAT GOOGLE WILL DO IN MÁLAGA

Google engineers and experts will work on the development and large-scale application of advanced tools to combat “sophisticated threats”; these tools will be based on speed, open source licensing and artificial intelligence .

According to Google, artificial intelligence "is able to identify malicious code in scripts with 70 percent greater accuracy than traditional techniques alone." While respect for the principles of openness will materialize in a space dedicated to the specialized training of government officials, companies, job seekers, non-governmental organizations and students.

10 MILLION FROM GOOGLE FOR CYBERSECURITY TRAINING

Alongside the launch of the Málaga centre, Google also announced a $10 million program for cybersecurity training in Europe that will contribute to the EU Cybersecurity Skills Academy, a European Commission initiative aimed at boosting skills in this sector.

Specifically, Google and the ECCRI CCI (European Cyber Conflict Research Incubator) will jointly launch the European Cybersecurity Seminars. As Google explains, “the program provides universities with a cybersecurity training plan and curriculum, allowing them to offer cybersecurity courses to students from diverse backgrounds and without prior experience.” The Mountain View company will offer funding of up to 1 million euros, materials and training to eight universities in eight different European countries that will participate in the European Cybersecurity Seminars.

THE OBJECTIVES

Google expects over sixteen hundred students to enroll in the initial program. The universities will each have two years to manage at least two cybersecurity seminars; each student will have to practically apply the skills learned during the lessons by supporting at least two "community organizations" to improve their cyber defenses. According to the company's forecasts, at least 3,200 European organizations will be reached in the first two years of the European Cybersecurity Seminars.

The program will also serve to finance the creation, by the ECCRI CIC incubator, of educational resources for universities such as the first “flexible” curriculum dedicated to cybersecurity designed to offer basic skills. This curriculum will be translated into eight European languages – including Ukrainian, Google points out – and will be available free of charge to all institutions that want to take it up.

Google estimates that it has already trained twelve million people in digital skills in Europe.
