Here's how Fincantieri and Leonardo strengthen ties with Greece

Italian defense companies strengthen collaboration with Elefsis Shipyards and Greek industry. Athens still has not awarded the two billion tender for the new Greek corvettes which sees Fincantieri in the race against the French Naval Group

Cooperation with Greece is strengthened: Fincantieri and Leonardo have signed further memoranda of understanding with potential new suppliers at Elefsis.

As part of the collaboration with the local industrial ecosystem and the strengthening of the collaboration between Italy and Greece, yesterday the two national giants signed a series of further memoranda of understanding (MoU) with potential new Greek suppliers.

With the signing – informs a joint note – the foundations were laid for the definition of possible commercial relationships.

The event took place in Elefsis, where Onex Elefsis Shipyards is based. “This site is the cornerstone of Fincantieri's strategy should the Group, as prime contractor, be awarded the Hellenic Navy corvette program promoted by the Greek Ministry of National Defence” specifies the note.

"Greece will soon decide who to assign the contract for the construction of 3 (plus one as an option) new corvettes for its Navy" underlined Rid at the beginning of January.

The Naval Group proposal and that of Fincantieri are in the competition. On 17 December, the Trieste shipbuilding group and Onex Shipyards & Technologies Group had already signed an agreement in Athens for the creation of a production and maintenance line for corvettes throughout their life cycle, located at the Elefsis shipyards. Even earlier, Fincantieri had signed agreements to start a possible supply chain in Greece last October.

All the details.

The involvement of Greek industry therefore continues, not only with reference to the corvette programme. In fact, the Italian team made up of Fincantieri, Leonardo – as system integrator for the Combat Management System and the main naval sensors, systems and artillery – Mbda Italia and Elettronica, is united in supporting the development of a wide-ranging shipbuilding partner with advanced skills and reliable.

THE GROUP FROM TRIESTE ON POLE FOR THE GREEK CORVETTE RACE

Athens has still not awarded the two billion tender for the new Greek corvettes which sees Fincantieri in competition with the French Naval.

As Giovanni Martinelli explained on Startmag , “the proposal presented by the Italian shipbuilding group would still have an advantage over the French one; moreover, thanks to a series of solid reasons. It would be ahead because it is economically more advantageous; specifically, there is talk of €2.1 billion against €2.2 and a more favorable overall financial plan for Athens. Then it would also be from an industrial point of view; given that Fincantieri itself has already entered into agreements with local industrial subjects (as has also done Leonardo and Elettronica)” in addition to the possibility of producing some units directly in Greece with the agreement with Onex owner of the Elefsis shipyards.

Pietro Batacchi, director of Rid , is also convinced of the excellent chances of success for Fincantieri: “The offer of the Italian shipbuilding group is very attractive because it envisages the construction of the first ship in Italy, in the integrated Riva-Muggiano shipyard, and the other 2 (plus the possible option) in the local Elefsis shipyards, against a robust transfer of know-how and an investment of around eighty million euros. A tempting opportunity for the local shipbuilding industry, seeking a relaunch after the dark years of the crisis, with a relapse between direct and related employees that could reach 2,500 employees and around 300 million euros in returns over 10 years”.
