How Turkey sprints with the first unmanned ship Ulaq

Giuseppe Gagliano's article on the state of the Turkish defense program of the unmanned ship Ulaq

The Turkey starts mass production of the first ship unmanned, the Ulaq.

According to the Turkish Ministry of Defense, during the exercise Denizkurdu-2021 (Sea Wolf-2021) held between May 25 and June 6 in the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean, USLA Ulaq marked a major success for the Turkish Navy.

DEVELOPED BY THE ARES AND METEKSAN DEFENSE SHIPYARDS

Developed by Turkish shipyards Ares and Meteksan Defense, Ulaq can travel up to 400 kilometers (248 miles) at a speed of 65 kilometers (40 miles) per hour. The ship has night vision and encrypted communications equipment and can perform surveillance, reconnaissance and surface combat missions.

PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN JANUARY 2021

Ulaq was launched in January 2021. A few months later, it successfully passed all tests, including hitting a ground target with a laser-guided Cirite missile.

The development of the unmanned ship Ulaq, including research and conceptual studies for the production process, began in 2018 and by 2020 Turkey was able to develop the prototype of the ship.

THE FEATURES OF ULAQ

With a length of 11 meters, the ship is equipped with four laser-guided 70 mm Cirit missiles and two similarly guided long-range anti-tank missiles. The leadership of the Turkish army expects to be able to participate in joint operations with complementary means such as tactical aerial drones, including attack drones.

In late May, Ulaq fired its first live ammunition, launching two Cirit missiles off the coast of the Antalya region.
