Iveco Defense will supply the Navy with 36 amphibious armored vehicles

To the Navy 36 amphibious armored vehicles from Iveco Defense Vehicles, part of the Iveco Group, a group born in January 2022 from the spin-off of CNH Industrial

Iveco Defense Vechicles will supply the amphibious armored vehicle in the "Troop Transport" version to the Navy for the San Marco Marina Brigade.

On 22 December, the Land Armaments Department signed a contract with Iveco Defense Vehicles (IDV) for the supply of 36 amphibious armored vehicles (VBA) for the Navy.

Specifically, the contract – reports a note – falls within the scope of a program for the expansion and renewal of the fleet of defense vehicles to increase the national operational capability of projection from the sea by the Italian Navy.

Idv is part of the Iveco Group, a group born in January 2022 from the demerger of the Commercial & Specialty Vehicles, Powertrain and related Financial Services activities of CNH Industrial (which has the Exor group, the family holding company as main shareholder Italian Agnelli). Cnh Industrial, together with Leonardo, controls the Iveco-Oto Melara (CIO) consortium, leader of the national industry in land armaments.

All the details.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VEHICLE

The Vba is an 8×8 vehicle capable of operating on all types of terrain and is capable of being launched and recovered from an amphibious vessel in the open sea, while offering excellent mobility and high ballistic protection, anti -mine and anti-Ied. The 700hp Fpt Cursor 16 engine, combined with the seven-speed automatic transmission and the H driveline derived from the Centauro and the Vbm Freccia allow the Vba to reach 105 km/h on the road. Furthermore, the two propellers located in the rear part, operated by hydraulic motors, guarantee navigation beyond "sea state 3" and a speed of 6 knots.

LEONARDO SUPPLIES THE TURRET

Therefore, the platform is equipped with a remote Hitrole Light turret, supplied by Leonardo, with a 12.7 mm caliber weapon and latest generation C4 systems. The amphibious vehicle for the Navy is based on the Superav 8×8, which is the amphibious vehicle platform on which the Acv, the amphibious vehicle for the US Marine Corps, was built in partnership with Bae Systems.

THE NAVY'S MULTI-YEAR VBA ACQUISITION PROGRAM

The multi-year program mentioned relates to the acquisition of Amphibious Armored Vehicles (VBA) to be assigned to the Martina departments and inclusive of the relative ten-year technical and logistical support. It refers to 64 new platforms, of which a first tranche, equal to 34 units.

As stated in the draft ministerial decree approving the programme , "in line with the provisions of the multi-year planning document (Dpp) for defense for the three-year period 2021-2023 , the overall forecast cost of the program is estimated at 236 million euros , aimed at the acquisition of 34 VBAs and related ten-year technical-logistical support. This expenditure is financed, limited to 206 million euros, from the allocations deriving from the allocation of the investment fund pursuant to art. 1, co. 14 of the law n. 160 of 2019 and for the remaining 120 million euros on the chapters with requirements of the investment sector from the Ordinary Budget of the Ministry of Defense within the resources available under current legislation."

As regards the completion of the programme, it should be noted that the remaining total forecast value of 274 million euros, necessary for the acquisition of a further 30 vehicles and related logistical support, "will be achieved through subsequent measures which may be contractually refinancing of the intervention” explained the outline of the ministerial decree.

In the 2022-2024 Dpp, the program received a necessary integration of 323 million euros through "required" resources brought by the 2022 Budget Law.
