Leonardo and Fincantieri, all the news on Orizzonte Sistemi Navali

Not only an agreement in the underwater domain, the renewed industrial agreements between Leonardo and Fincantieri will not be able to ignore Orizzonte Sistemi Navali. A new CEO also took over at the helm of the company in November

“Peace broke out with Fincantieri”, says Leonardo.

“In the sense that with my colleague Folgiero [CEO of Fincantieri] we said to each other that if the external situation is so complicated we cannot have internal competition” highlighted Roberto Cingolani, CEO of the former Finmeccanica group, last month during the hearing before to the Defense Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.

For some time the two CEOs of the national defense giants have underlined the importance and need to strengthen cooperation in the pre-existing framework of Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (Osn). The latter is the joint venture between Fincantieri (51%) and Leonardo (49%) which has already produced results, for example with the Fremm.

Speaking at the third edition of MedOr last July, an event promoted by LeonardoFoundation, Cingolani had already anticipated that with his Fincantieri counterpart "we met a few days ago" (together in the photo) and that "we are new", and therefore "we must “collaborate”. For some time now , Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri, has also underlined the need to strengthen "the collaboration with Leonardo and strengthen Orizzonte Sistemi Navali to increase the integration between platforms and combat systems". “We also want to increase joint marketing.” And now, it seems that the time to seal this collaboration is ripe.

“We are writing a well-crafted industrial agreement on some things that must work: they make things that float, we make things that fly, it's not that complicated and electronics act as glue” Leonardo Cingolani's CEO anticipated during the hearing.

No sooner said than done: on 27 October, Fincantieri and Leonardo announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in the diving domain, with the aim of pooling their respective skills and capabilities in the sector.

But the renewed industrial agreements between the two companies cannot ignore Orizzonte Sistemi Navali which from this month also has a new CEO .

WHAT HORIZON NAVAL SYSTEMS DOES

The joint venture controlled by Fincantieri (51%) and Leonardo (49%) has been operating for ten years in the naval engineering and systems sector, designing and building military naval units, in particular corvettes, frigates and aircraft carriers. Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (Osn) is the system integrator of the Italian-French Fremm program for the construction of 10 frigates for the Italian Navy and, on the international market, of important programs for the construction of amphibious units and minehunters.

THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN FINCANTIERI AND LEONARDO FOR THE NAVY

Orizzonte Sistemi Navali recentlysigned the contract to build 3 new generation patrol vessels for the Navy for a value of 925 million euros.

Last 31 July Osn signed with the Directorate of Naval Armaments of the General Secretariat of Defence/DNA, the contract for the construction of three new generation patrol vessels (Ppx), as part of the OPV (Offshore Patrol Vessel) acquisition program of the Italian navy. The contract includes options relating to an additional three units and the infrastructure upgrades necessary for the naval bases of Augusta, Cagliari and Messina, where the ships will be based.

“This contract rewards and brings together the best of Italian technology. Leonardo and Fincantieri, through OSN, are able to offer "state of the art" solutions for national security. This is the result of a solid and prospective synergy. The Navy has the guarantee of safeguarding a long-term capacity" Cingolani commented.

“The program, through the relaunch of Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, further consolidates the collaboration with Leonardo, allowing us to concentrate the ship system integration skills and, in a broader sense, reaffirms the value of our Country-System” echoes Folgiero.

Just a few weeks earlier, Fincantieri and Leonardo had obtained the Mco program for the Cavour and Orizzonte class ships. On 20 July Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (Osn) had signed, with the Directorate of Naval Armaments of the General Secretariat of Defence/DNA, the Framework Agreement for Maintenance in Operational Conditions (MCO) for the aircraft carrier Cavour and the Orizzonte class destroyers Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio of the Italian Navy.

ACTIVITY ON INTERNATIONAL MARKETS

As regards activity on international markets, as stated in the 2022 budget report, commercial activity continues with Algeria and in particular with regard to the Mine Hunters programme. The company is awaiting the execution of a contract for aftermarket life support services for units built in Italy.

As regards supplies for Algeria, the delivery of the third minehunter unit to the Algerian Navy took place on 4 May 2022 and 12 August 2022, at the end of the crew's operational training period. Activities on the third unit continue during the current year. In November 2022, a support contract for the ScanEagle program was signed with the American customer Insitu.

THE SUMMITS

The Osn board of directors is currently made up of the following directors: Renzo Tosini, Barbara Gaione, Marco De Fazio, Sabrina Sanguineti, Wanda Costa and Dario Deste (CEO until November 2023).

Since April 2020, the board has been chaired by Guido Crosetto, who held the role of president of the board of directors of Orizzonte Sistemi Navali until last autumn: in October 2022, Prime Minister Meloni appointed him Minister of Defense.

From autumn 2022 to May 2023 the Orizzonte Sistemi Navali board of directors remained without a president. On May 2, 2023, the shareholders' meeting appointed the new board of directors together with the president: councilor Barbara Gaione was designated as the new president of the Osn board of directors.

THE NEW CEO OF ORIZZONTE SISTEMI NAVALI

As mentioned at the beginning, from this month Giovanni Sorrentino is leading Orizzonte Sistemi Navali. The naval group of Trieste made this known this week through a post on social channels. Sorrentino therefore succeeds in the role of CEO of Osn to Dario Deste, general director of Fincantieri's Military Ships Division and CEO of the company owned by Fincantieri and Leonardo from May 2022.

It is no coincidence that Sorrentino himself was program manager of the Fremm project within the Joint Cooperation Organization in the field of armaments. The new CEO of Orizzonte Sistemi Navali boasts a long experience in the Defense sector, where he began his career holding institutional roles (from the Navy to the Ministry of Defence).

ALL OSN NUMBERS

The company closed the 2022 financial statements in positive with a profit of 209 million euros (an improvement compared to 119 million the previous year). Osn recorded a turnover of 415 million euros last year (down from 608 million in December 2021). The workload, to be developed in the coming years, amounts to almost one billion euros (965 million).

Costs will decrease in 2022: from 444 million in 2021 they stand at 366 million in the budget year ended last year.

The financial position is positive and stands at 110 million euros. The company boasts total tangible assets worth 123 million euros in 2022
