Netflix, Disney Plus and Amazon Prime. Who will win the streaming war?

Netflix, Disney Plus and Amazon Prime. Who will win the streaming war?

Competition in the video streaming market has intensified as Disney Plus is catching up with Netflix in number of subscribers

Netflix retains the scepter of video streaming king but the "war for the throne" is on.

Earlier this week, Disney announced a restructuring of the company and its media and entertainment divisions more focused on content distribution and ad sales on its Disney Plus channel.

In the realm of streaming services, Disney Plus appears to pose the biggest threat to Netflix. When it launched last November, the Disney group said it expected the service to reach 60 to 90 million subscribers globally by 2024. Disney Plus has already surpassed 60.5 million subscribers.

The Disney streaming combo (Disney Plus plus other services) became the third largest subscriber service in the world in 12 months with 100 million. It ranks after Netflix (193 million subscribers) and Amazon Prime Video (150 million), beating rivals such as Hulu (32 million) and Hbo Max (36 million).

Here is who wins and who among the video platforms the streaming war.

THE SPASMODIC GROWTH OF DISNEY PLUS USERS

Of the new video streaming services launched in the past year, Disney's combined offering looks the most successful with over 100 million users.

reorganized in August to combine its film and television operations under a single studio head to better compete in streaming media wars. As of June 30, HBO Max had 4.1 million users.

A little better is Peacock, the NbcUniversal service (owned by Comcast) launched last April, which has reached 15 million users. But at the moment the scepter of the king of streaming remains with Netflix. The streaming pioneer boasts 193 million, even though he built that customer base in 13 years.

Finally Apple. The Cupertino giant does not report data for Apple TV +, but Ampere Analysis estimated the service had 33.6 million users in January.

NETFLIX STAYS THE ADVANTAGE … BUT …

Leading independent streaming guide for consumers, Reelgood , showed data from each streaming platform, showing that Netflix continues to hold its lead with a 25% market share (albeit less than its 32% share in the second quarter). Prime Video recorded a 1% increase to a 21% share in the third quarter, remaining in second place.

Beware though, the gap between the first two platforms has narrowed significantly.

In the case of HBO Max and Disney Plus, the two new platforms have carved out their market share in fourth and fifth place respectively. HBO Max rose 9%, while Disney Plus remained stable at 6%. With these figures, HBO Max surpassed Disney Plus by 50% in the second quarter, despite the first only launching in late May. Hulu maintained its third position despite dropping from 19% to 15%.
