What happens to ITsART (leaking pieces)

What happens to ITsART (leaking pieces)

All the latest news on ITsART, much desired by Minister Franceschini

The " Netflix of culture " has lost its mind. Only three months after taking office, the managing director Guido Casali left the leadership of ITsART , of which he was also contet director. Casali had arrived on 5 October 2021 at the top of the digital platform created by the Ministry of Culture and created by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and ChiliTV.

Casali resigns due to differences in the development of the platform

As reported by Ansa, the former CEO Casali resigned due to " differences on the development strategies of the platform ". This version was denied by ITsART, which attributes Casali's resignation to personal decisions. "The elaboration of the strategies for the development of the Platform was the responsibility of Casali himself – reports the same platform -, who therefore resigned due to a personal decision ".

ITsART platform with three heads

The streaming platform was strongly supported by the Ministry of Culture which invested 10 million euros . To manage the platform, the company ITsART Spa was set up, 51% controlled by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and the remaining 49% by Chili TV , an internet content distribution company whose founders Stefano Parisi . The company therefore sees the Ministry of Culture excluded.

The nomination of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti

Guido Casali had been appointed head of the company on the recommendation of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti , while Chili Spa, the technological partner of IRsART, had appointed Giorgio Tacchia as chairman. Casali had taken the place of Giano Biagini , general manager of Chili, called to fill the role for the first few months. Guido Casali had arrived at ITsART after a long experience as a manager in the cultural field, he was Channel Manager of Classica , the channel distributed by Sky dedicated to classical music, and he oversaw the launch of Sky Arte , where, until 2020, he held the role of programming manager and commissioning editor. He has also collaborated as an Expert with Creative Europe – Media Program at the European Commission.

The contents of the platform

The platform has been operational in Italy and Great Britain since last June and in the rest of Europe since November. His contents are of undoubted quality, divided into three sections: stage , places and stories . Within these categories it is possible to choose artistic contents ranging from music, to theater, to auteur cinema, to virtual visits to the great Italian museums. On ITsART you can find, just to give a few examples, the performances of the Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia directed by Maestro Antonio Pappano, the musical story from the Villa di Poppea by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the Ballet Madina dalla Scala di Milan with Roberto Bolle, the concerts by Paolo Conte from the Reggia della Venaria in Turin, and by Claudio Baglioni from the Opera House, and the tribute to Ennio Morricone from the Pompeii Amphitheater. The offer includes established artists and new talents, on-demand content and real-time shows.

The numbers of ITsART

As “ Il Fatto Quotidiano ” wrote, in the first six months of streaming there were more than 1,960,000 sessions on the platform , almost 5.4 million page views , more than 150,000 registered users and over 115,000 hours of viewing. No data were disclosed on the content purchased, and therefore on the flow of profitability generated. The only leaked economic data is the signing of a 1.8 million euro contract with Media Maker , a Milanese company specializing in the production and distribution of audiovisual content.

The Netflix of culture without a subscription

ITsART, although announced by the minister of culture Franceschini as the " Netflix of culture ", did not have the same success as the American giant. The differences, moreover, are not insignificant and do not concern only the contents, about a thousand and 60 distributed exclusively, by nature more of a niche, present on the Italian platform. It is not possible to subscribe to a subscription that gives access to all the ITsART material, the use of the individual contents, live or on demand, must be purchased individually. The price varies , as does Prime Video, depending on whether you want to buy or rent a product. Prices range from 3 to 6 euros. In case of rental, the content is available for 28 days and 48 hours from the first play.

The criticisms of ITsART

Many criticisms derive from the competition that free-to-air channels platforms such as Mediaset and RaiPlay do to ITsART, several titles offered for a fee by ITsART, in fact, can be found for free on the two platforms. RaiPlay also offers a vast choice of cultural content and programs to an audience not too dissimilar to that of ITsART . Finally, the platform does not produce content, as does Netflix or Prime Video, but only distributes content provided by cultural institutions in exchange for the proceeds of the proceeds.
