THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN FINCANTIERI AND NAVANTIA

Returning to the agreement with Fincantieri, the president of Navantia Domínguez explained to Infodefensa.com that “the agreement is based on a premise: when we find ourselves, we must collaborate, it is essential in Europe. The MoU with Fincantieri is part of that alliance that looks to European projects, the European Patrol Corvette (EPC) and the 4E (Essential Elements of European Escort), but also to projects of certain dimensions such as the destroyers that Fincantieri intends to build and which few companies have the ability to develop ".

A NON-EXCLUSIVE COLLABORATION ACCORDING TO THE SPANISH SHIPYARD

But the collaboration will not be exclusively Italian-Spanish according to Navantia's vision.

“We see that there are synergies, we are competitors and will continue to be in many markets, but we also see the synergies to reinforce each other. This is the goal and that collaboration will not only be with Fincantieri in Italy, but we will see it with the French, with the Americans… It is so, and more in this moment that we talk a lot about the Europe of Defense ”added Domínguez.

ALREADY WORKING ON THE EUROPEAN CORVETTES

Finally, in the interview with infodefensa.com , Domínguez insisted several times on the need to collaborate in the new framework of the Europe of Defense. The main bet is the European corvette. "In France, Italy and Spain, both the industry and the Ministries of Defense are convinced they are tackling this project and I believe that the way of working is combined, exploiting the synergies and the way of working of each to make a profitable final product" .

WHERE IS THE COLLABORATION ON THE EPC

Navantia and Fincantieri are already collaborating on the European Patrol Corvette (Epc) program, to date the most important naval initiative within the European Permanent Structured Cooperation (Pesco) project, together with the French Naval Group.

With the aim of designing and developing a new class of warships, the European Council adopted the EPC program on 12 November 2019.

Italy (as coordinator) and France were joined by Greece and Spain.

Last February Naviris, the 50% joint venture between Fincantieri and Naval Group which is responsible for the development of cooperation programs, and Navantia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) intended to expand industrial cooperation for the Epc program.

AND THE 4E PROJECT

Finally, the Navantia number one recalled that there is also “the 4E project with all the elements associated with that platform”. The manager insisted that this type of project will strengthen European industry. “We must look to Europe without fear of collaborating with natural competitors”.

The latter is one of the fourteen new projects approved by the European Council, bringing the total number of projects launched under the Pesco since 2018 to 60.

As Aurelio Giansiracusa pointed out in Ares Difesa, “Rome is also present in the Spanish- led Essential Elements of European Escort (4E) project”. The program is "aimed at developing the most important systems of any sector of naval combat units that can be built in Europe from 2035 to 2045 covering five areas: combat system, communication and information system, navigation system, management system of the platform and systems integration. This program is set up on the basis of the experience acquired for the development of any important shipbuilding program ".
