ATLANTIA HIGHWAYS: A DISASTER APPROACH IS LEADING CONTE TO THE NTH FLOP

The well-known Atlantia-Autostrade-Government question, taken wrong from the beginning, is turning into yet another stalemate for Conte and yet another betrayal of the prospects of seeing a dignified situation to the problem.

It all started with what happened at Ponte Morandi and subsequently, with the inspections imposed by the judicial authority. To be brief:

  • the Ponte Morandi collapsed, evidently, due to poor maintenance;
  • culpable omissions of maintenance in various extensive sections of the network came to light, with the need to carry out tests and urgent repairs both to tunnels and viaducts;
  • in the meantime, a second trial linked to a very serious accident on the Gran Sasso section has also reached a sentence, again against the motorway company.

The damages deriving from these negligent and malicious acts (remember that there are still leaders under criminal investigation for having falsified the reports on the inspections and on the actual situation of the network.

These are very serious acts that could have led to multi-billion dollar claims for damages and therefore to the return of the network through insolvency or by arrangement. Several prestigious jurists had suggested pursuing this path that was certainly conflicting, but which would lead, in an agreed or otherwise, to the end of the concessions with the least outlay of public money. After all, what are the direct damages to the network? And those indirect to the city of Genoa deriving from the collapse of the bridge and the blocking of traffic for almost two months in June and August on the A26? Do we want to talk about several billion euros? And the damage to the rest of the network?

Instead, with his usual policy of "Shot in the circle, shot in the barrel" and above all of "Let's not disturb the owners of steam" Conte tried the useless path of mediation with CDP's offer to Atlantia for the purchase ASPI. The result was obvious: bankruptcy: CDP, which considers the potential damages for pending lawsuits, values ASPI 3 billion, while Atlantia values it 12. An insurmountable difference, which brought the negotiations to an end.

Now insult is added to the damage: according to what reported in Thelondoneconomics, the minority shareholders of Atlantia are preparing to sue the Italian state for the damage caused to their company by the improper pressures brought. A ridiculous situation, shameful in any other country in the world that has suffered what Italy has suffered, but which appears almost obvious with the Conte government. We have not been able to seriously put ASPI in arrears for the damages, no expropriation has been made, and now we even risk paying Atlantia and the Benettons for disturbing them.

What do the Cinque Stelle and Toninelli say? Are they lost in the Brenner tunnel? Or, simply, he no longer cares about anything.
